I shall prove that a "bath" consisting of a SINGLE harmonic oscillator coupled linearily to the "system" can induce genuine quantum dissipation. The result seems to contradict what we all learnt at school. I will show that 1. it is correct. 2. that no law of physics is violated.
The proof is based on a joint project with M. Solomyak (Waves in Random Media 14 (2004), S143-S153 (Smilansky) and S173-S185 (Solomyak)).
