Policy for Assessment of Autumn Semester Study Abroad Students
Full year or second semester associate students are normally assessed in
the usual way by written examination in May/June. Associate students who
are at Queen Mary for the first semester only should be asked by the course
organiser early in the semester to agree to the form the assessments will
take. This should be based on the following principles:
- The lecturer must be confident that the marks are based on the student's
own work and so the assessment will normally include a test taken under
exam conditions, or an oral examination.
- Any special test or examination should be as late in the term as practicable,
so that as much of the syllabus as possible is covered.
- The marking of any test or examination should be checked by a co-examiner,
who should also agree to the overall assessment mark.
- The method of assessment must be acceptable to both Queen Mary and
the student's home university.
- The marks from Autumn Semester students will be given to the Registry
at the end of the autumn semester and will then be returned to the SEB in
the following June for formal approval.
Students on first or second year courses may be assessed on the basis of
in-class tests or a combination of these and weekly coursework. For more
advanced courses a special written paper should be set, or the student should
be examined orally by the lecturer and a co-examiner; the final mark may
again contain weekly coursework as a component.
This policy was ratified by the SEB on 18 June 2001
