[This is transcribed from my training book for the period when I was a student at the University of Queensland.] Training book 1964 - 1967 ------------------------- Prior to 1964: Best 440: 56.2 Best 880: 2:04.5 Best mile: 4:34.8 Condition: good. [During the week 21st-28th December, condition seemed to "come to" me. After the school season (Sept 7 - Oct 12) I had allowed myself to lose condition. I re-started light training on Nov 5th and started heavy training on Nov 24th. I commenced running club runs in Brisbane as a member of the University club on Nov 23rd.] Distinctions gained: State level: 4th, Schoolboys mile under 16, 1962 (4:58.0) 2nd, G.P.S. mile under 17, 1963 (4:34.8) 2nd, Schoolboys mile open, 1963 (4:35.9) 2nd, Queensland 4x880, 1963-4 (2:10.9) (for University, with Smith, Howes, Jones) 2nd, Queensland 4x1mile, 1963-4 (4:48.1) (for University, with Smith, Howes, Wyatt) School level: Co-captain, T.G.S. athletics team, 1963. T.G.S. mile winner and 880 runner-up, 1963 (4:53.3 and 2:04.5) Downs mile winner, 1963 (4:42.4) 3 unofficial runs under T.G.S. open record in 1963 (4:40.0, 4:34.8 and 4;35.9) 2nd fastest T.G.S. miler on record. 1963: Dec. 29th - 5 miles slow 30th - 4 x 880yds average 2.28 31st - no training (slight illness) 1964: Jan. 1st - 6 x 440yds average 66 (very encouraging) 2nd - no training 3rd - no training 4th - Q'ld trials, Mile U17 At the start, I was pushed rund a very fast first lap but took the lead and kept it to win from my old rival Woodriff of Downlands. In the 3rd and 4th laps I felt distressed probably due to heat and fast 1st lap. Time: 4:40.3 Place: 1st Laps: 65, 73, 74, 68. Jan. 5th - Q'ld trials, 880yd U17 Again a fast first lap in which I fell into 3rd position. In the second lap my legs would not respond and run faster but I passed one (Rynja). Pollard won easily. Time: 2:06.7 Place: 2nd Laps: 60.5, 66. Q'ld trials, medley relay U17 A race between myself and Pollard. He took the lead and I followed. Several times I tried to pass but he held me off and I relieved pressure as there was no importance to the race. However I almost caught him down the straight (margin 6in - 1ft) My time: 2:08.0 Laps: 63, 65. Jan. 6th - No training 7th - 3 miles fairly fast (blisters) 8th - 6 x 440yds fast and 880 yds windsprints 9th - 2 miles sprint-jogs 10th - No training 11th - Club 880yds U17 I was left very badly at the start but by keeping my even-paced running for the first 220 I could piic up all I had lost as the pace was very slow, although it necessitated a lot of unnecessary running wide which could have made a difference in the finish. I passed the quarter in 64 behind Rynja. I followed him arund the second lap and when Woodriff, running third, struck with 100yds to go, I too made my move. We came home in a blanket finish with only two feet between first and third. Despite this I was not distressed as the pace was very slow. Time: 2:09.6 Place: 2nd Laps: 64, 65.5. Jan. 12th - 6 miles fairly fast 13th - 12 x 100yds with fast starts 14th - 4 x 880yds 15th - 6 x 440yds 16th - no training 17th - no training 18th - Q'ld v N.S.W. mile U17 I drew lane 1 and was well boxed in at the start (partly due to New South Wales tactics, partly to Woodriff's and Crossthwaite's incompetence). I struck with the three N.S.W. runners around the first (fast - 3:30) three laps but in the last they pulled away to fight out the finish among themselves in 4:34. However I easily passed Crossthwaite for 4th place. Time: 4:38.7 Place: 4th Laps: 66, 72, 73, 69. Jan. 19th - Q'ld v N.S.W. 880yds U17 Again left at the start from lane 6, but I moved up to Pollard's shoulder to try to help him by preventing anyone from passing, but the pace proved too fast and I dropped back to last. However, I easily passed Rynja in the straight after seeing Pollard go on to a fine 2:00.2 win. Time: 2:06.3 Place: 5th Laps: 62, 64. Jan. 20th - no training 21st - 12 miles fast (74 mins) 22nd - 4 x 440yds + 440yds walk 23rd - no training 24th - 3 miles fast (17:21.2, mile 5:45, 5:51, 5:45) 25th - no training 26th - no training 27th - 6 miles fast (36:24.7, miles 5:59, 6:07, 6:06, 6:09, 6:06, 5:58) 28th - 440 and 880 fast 29th - no training 30th - 2 miles fast into strong wind (11:12.8, half miles 2:42, 2:48, 2:51, 2:52) 31st - no training Feb. 1st - Inter-club mile open (2nd div.) I did not spur myself to any great effort in this race as it was of no great significance. The first lap was very slow but a faster-than-usual second lap and a passing manoeuvre by Crossthwaite allowed him and another to get away from me and fight out the finsh. I just continued on and finished without exerting myself. Time: 4:45.6 Place: 3rd Laps: 70, 71, 75, 71 Feb. 2nd - no training 3rd - 3 miles fast (16:59.8, miles 5:37, 5:42, 5:41) 4th - 9 miles at medium pace 5th - 2 miles fast (10:55.8, half miles 2:40, 2:46, 2:49, 2:41) 6th - no training 7th - no training 8th - Inter-club 3 miles, open Being a novice, decided to run at even pace irrespective of the field. In spite of this, I started a little fast (a 78 first lap) but soon slowed down to just over 80. After the settling down, I didn't let anyone past, but I passed several and lapped a large number. The big field of 19 was well thinned out by the end of the race, when I didn't bother to sprint home but came in at a fast stride to finish in a very satisfactory time. Time: 16:07.0 Place: 6th Miles (approx.) 5:17, 5:27, 5:23. Feb. 9th - no training 10th - 6 miles at medium pace 11th - no training 12th - 3 x 880yds 13th - 3 miles slow with strides and sprints 14th - no training 15th - Inter-club mile open (2nd division) I decided to run this race at a easy but steady pace. As a result, I was left at the start, but my steady pace soon brought me up again to 3rd position. Once again, I was not at all troubled, and could have run much faster. In the last lap, Holden passed me in the back straight. I did not bother resisting but stuck to him around the turn and struck down the straight. He beat me home by a few inches only. The race was very encouraging for the coming State titles because of the lack of serious effort. I believe I am now close to my schoolboy form and will be aiming for a fast run in the titles (close to my G.P.S. time). Time: 4;41.3 Place: 4th Entered State titles in junior mile and 2 miles Feb. 16th - no training 17th - no training 18th - 6 x 440yds 19th - 4 x 88yds uphill 20th - no training 21st - no training 22nd - Inter-club 3 miles open Another fast first lap (I went through in 76 and was 10th at that stage) thinned out the big field of aout 20. After this, I settled down to a pace that would have given me just under 16 minutes (my aim), but in the latter stages I was too lazy to force myself to keep the pace up. However, I improved my own position and lapped a large number of people, but unfortunately was lapped myself (for the first time ever) in the back straight of the winner, Irwin's, last lap. I came home at a fast stride. Time: 16:04.0 Place: 6th Approx. mile: 5:19, 5:23, 5:22. Feb. 23rd - no training 24th - no training 25th - 3 miles hill work 26th - 4 x 440yds 27th - no training 28th - no training 29th - State titles, mile U19 I reached th track hampered by lack of sleep and a bicycle ride from College. The pace was on from the start and I took up second last running position in a field of seven. I passed the first half in 2:18 running easily. In the last half I did not force myself, but passed Holden in the 3rd. Holden passed me in the 4th back straight and I passed Archer in the straight and almost caught Holden. The two chief facts that emerged are the slow (70) first lap, and the confirmation of the fact that I have lost the ability to force myself. Resolved too train hard for University athletics in May. Time: 4:39.2 Place: 5th Laps: 66, 72, 71, 70. Mar. 1st - no training 2nd - no training 3rd - 6 miles at fairly slow pace (cramped leg muscle) 4th - no training 5th - no training 6th - no training 7th - State titles, 2 miles U19 I felt much better for ths race - I had been building myself up for it. The track was very wet and slippery. The usual fast starting pace left me second last in the field of seven, in front of Holden. However, in the first two laps I passed Stephenson and challenged Archer. Coffey faded and we went past him, allowing me to challenge Archer again. Maugham and Moy had a 50 yard lead, so my race developed into a struggle with Archer. Twice more I challenged him and he resisted, but I stuck to him and passed him in the home straight. My most satisfying race since G.P.S., it was just what I needed to restore my failing self-confidence. It gave me a bigger lift than it should have, but this was good. Time: 9:54.5 Place: 3rd. The race for 5th developed into a struggle between Glover and myself although Wyatt and Busby were ahead of me in the first lap. Glover had me then but I tok him in the 2nd straight and he took me again in the 4th back straght and held me in the straight to come home by a yard. All through the race I realized that I was loafing - despite the humidity I hardly raised a sweat. However, the time was a marvellous 4:36. Place: 6th on the whole, 2nd in the Freshers' race. Laps: 65, 70, 72, 69. Summary, 1963-1964 My season was away to a very late start (started from scratch on 1st July) and then followed a series of ups and downs. The first part (and the most successful) was the school season. Spurred on by the incentive of captaining a Great Public Schools team I finished the school season with a 4:34.8 mile and a 4;35.9 mess, both around State record class for under 17. The remainder of the season saw me at home without training facilities, but the second part of the season finished up with my representing the State over the 880 yards (2nd runner) and mile (1st runner) with times of 2:6.3 and 4:38.7 in the interstate meet. The third part was a still smaller peak, culminating in the State titles when I went up an age group to under 19; after a sleepless and training-less week, ran the mile in 4:39.2. Also in ths period had my introduction to the longer distances: a 3 miles best of 16:04. The season came to a climax with a place in the State under 19 2 miles in 9:54.5. After this, I concentrated on regaining basic condition for next season. Preview, 1964-1965 I entered April with a fair amount of condition and best mile 4:34.8, 2 miles 9:54.5. I also had a good indication that my strongest point would be in the longer distances. Te season follows a logical pattern of cross-country followed by track and culminating in the State titles except for my immediate worry, the University titles. I ntend only to run in the Freshers' titles, with possibly a run in the Club titles and in the I.C.C. if necessary. My aims for this period are 4;35, 15:40 (and 2:05). After this I will run in the winter cross-country season and I aim to represent the University in Inter-Varsity (my rivals that I knnow of are Moresby Smith, Al Jones, Ian Murray, Peter Hooper, and Peter Glover, and I think six men are picked). During the following athletics season (September - March) I am aiming for 4:25 and 15:00. (Remembering that because of my birthday my last chance to represent Queensland as a junior will be next year and to do that I will probably have to get under 4:20 which will be hard but not impossible.) Apr. 12th - 7 miles fartlek (cross-country) 13th - no training 14th - no training (rain) 15th - 4 x 1/2 mile (flat cross country; fast, approx. 2:15 v 3:00) 16th - no training 17th - no training 18th - University Freshers' Titles, 3 miles The race was run under fairly good conditions, but after a very hot and humid afternoon. From the start I could feel myself very slowly losing contact with the open grup, but I was drawing away rom the freshers. I went through the first mile fast (5 minutes), but after that my pace was very consistent; although I was working hard I was not at my top. I feel that I could have been in the front grooup I could have forced myself harder. Near the end I was gaining some ground on Ray Wyatt but he beat me over after I had jogged home for a slow (80) last lap. A very hard race and I don't know how it rates against other times, but at least it gave me a Freshers' title (1st). Time: 15:44. Laps: 74, 73, 75, 78, 81, 79, 80, 79, 80, 83, 82, 80. Apr. 19th - no training 20th - no training 21st - 1 1/2 miles + 1 mile flat cross-country 22nd - 2 miles (approx. 10:30) v 10mins v 3 miles (approx. 16:30) 23rd - 880 (2:10) v 5mins v 1 1/3 miles (6:55) (both days very wet conditions) 24th - 3 miles jogging 25th - College Trials, time trial - 660 yards (with Al Jones) We started at what seemed a very easy pave and went through the 220 in 29 seconds with Al in front and myself at his heels. At the 330, by prearranged plann I speeded up and went past him, the first time I had passed anyone at this my most vulnerable poibt. After that I came home fairly fast, inches in front. Although it was fast I was happy because it could have been much faster. Time: 1:29.2. Apr. 26th - 3 miles jogging 27th - Colleve trials, 880 yards (with Ian Murray) A disgustingly slow race. Ian led and I sat on him all the way dropping slowly further back until he won by a second, effortlessly. The withdrawal of Robert Norcott took away all my incentive. The slowness only tended to rub in the lesson of two days ago - make a break at the 330 mark. Time: 2:06.0. Laps: 61.5, 64.5. Apr. 28th - 10 x 100 yards hill (repetition) 29th - no training 30th - 4 miles jogging May 1st - 3 miles jogging 2nd - University Club titles, 1 mile Started well and went very easily through a fat first half. (I passed Ray Wyatt in the 2nd back straight, which explains why this lap was so fast.) For the second half I was running by myself and finished the fast time easily with plenty in reserve. Time: 4:35.0 Place: 6th Laps: 67, 67, 72, 69. May 3rd - light jogging 4th - Labor Day sports, 880 yards handicap Handicap - 7 seconds After 220 yards I had caught all of the runners ahead of me except Paul Commins whom I tookl with 220 to go. Al Jones caught me at the start of the straight and beat me by half a second. I feel I am still running well below my potential, as a half mile or mile hurts me much less than a three which I haven't even run properly yet. Time: 2:04.5 Place; 2nd Laps: 61, 63.5 Prize: Pewter beer mug. May 5th - no training 6th - 2 miles jogging and 3/4 mile sprint-jogs 7th - 3/4 mile fast 8th - no training 9th - University Club titles, 880 yards I had decided to make this a faster run. From the start I could tell it was going to be faster byt still not my fastest as I took 4th place and went through in 60. In the second lap I ran the back straight strongly passing Peter Busby into the curve and almost catching Peter Glover in the final straight, scoring Science's only point in the titles. Time: 2:02.7 Place: 3rd Laps: 60, 62.5 University Club titles, 3 miles Started at a fast but very easy pace (went through the first half mile in 2:28). After about 5 laps when I started to tire I ran on with some trace of rhythm in my running (a good sign - once I tried to slow down but couldn't). I passed Ray Wyatt in abut the 11th lap. Moresby Smith and Ron Irwin lapped me 100 yards out but I didn't resist (on their way to State and Varsity records). Time: 15:40.0 Place: 4th A very satisfying day - two personal bests. May 10th - to the Ridge (Mt Coot-tha) and back with Tony. 11th - 2 1/2 miles (6 minute pace) 12th - 1 1/2 miles (6 minute pace) 13th - 3 x 2 miles (5 1/2 - 6 minute pace v 1 min and 10 mins; 1 and 2 round the block, 3 on the track with Tony. 14th - 4 miles jogging (some stride-throughs) 15th - no training 16th - no training 17th - 4 x 440 yards (59, 60, 62, 59 v 4 mins) 18th - 6 miles fast (hilly) 19th - 4 miles easy (hilly) 20th - time trial over T.G.S. cross-country course (30:21) 21st - no training 22nd - 6 miles (jogging and hill work) 23rd - no training 24th - Olympic Appeal, 1 mile (open) In the absence of Brisbane competitors, I ran the race solo (though I was slightly pushed for 150 yards in the first lap). I failed by two yards to lap one competitor, and the second competitor was 120 yards hehind at the bell. Considering this, the slightly rough track, and a slight cold, the time was reasonable for this stage of the season. Time: 4:40.6 Place: 1st Laps: 66, 72, 74, 69. May 25th - 6 miles road with hill work 26th - 5 x 300 yards hill (Queen's Park) 27th - 12 miles (road) 28th - no training 29th - Hill work (Old Toll Bar, Mt Lofty via McKenzie St 16:00 and Herries St 6:20) 30th - 4 x lap of T. June 1st - 2 miles (v 2 min v) 3 miles road - 16:40 with Tony (and Al for 2nd) 2nd - 2 x 3 miles road (18:00 and 17:00 v 30 seconds) with Tony and Al 3rd - 5 miles track fartlek with Moresby 4th - 2 x 3 miles road (18:00 and 17:00 v 30 secs) with Tony and Al 5th - Jogging, and an easy run round the cross-country 6th - no training 7th - 6 miles fairly easily 8th - 6 x 440 yards (about 62 v walk 110) + 1 mile easy 9th - 7 x 660 yards (about 1:45-1:50 v jog 220) + 2 miles easy 10th - 6 x 440 yards (about 64 v 1 min.) + 1 mile easy 11th - 2 x 2 miles fairly easily 12th - 20 x 160 yards hill 13th - 5 miles fartlek with Moresby 14th - Up the hill with Moresby and Al 15th - 2 x 3 miles (17:40 and 18:10 v 5 mins. jogging) 16th - 7 x 440 yards (about 64 v 1 3/4 minutes) 17th - 8 x 440 yards (63 v 1 1/2 minutes) 18th - 5 miles easy running 19th - 2 miles very easy running 20th - Q.A.A.A. cross-country, 3 miles Not knowing the course, the starting time, or the necessity for an entry fee proved a handicap. From the start I was content to tag along while Irwin and Parry built up an unassailable lead. Just before the Vet Science I passed Vass into fourth place behind Stephenson, whom I wasn't game to pass for fear of losing my way, until the turn-off for the hill when I reluctantly passed him. I had to ask him for directions at the top of the hill; however I was comfortably ahead for the finishing burst and managed to hold him off for third place. Time: 16:35 Place: 3rd 21st - Mt Coot-tha with Moresby (no recovery at the top) - 62 1/2 mins. Still easy except the fourth hill. 22nd - 7 x 440 yds (63 v 4 x 1min and 2 x 3mins) 23rd - 8 x 440 yds (62 1/2 - 63 v 1 min) 24th - 10 x 440 yds (63 v 1 min) 25th - 8 miles fairly easy 26th - no training 27th - Q.A.A.A. cross-country, 3 miles (Handicap) I started from 5 mins 33 secs, 4 secs behind Jom Stephenson and 27 secs in front of Ian Murray. Stephenson put on his usual fast start and after I had made a bad job of the first rough stretch he had drawn away somewhat. I caught him on the track behind the colleges ad passed him when the track widened. Clem Parry caught me near the sewerage plant, after which I was in the bunch. Ian Murray passed me before the hiill, but I stuck with him until the end, too lazy to force myself to beat him although I think I could have. I finished fourth on actual times, behind Parry (15:21), Moy (15:52) and Murray (15:57). My time was 16:26. 28th - Mt Coot-tha with Al and Ian. This time it was easy all the way. I revenged yesterday's defeat by Ian by just beating him to the top and losing him completely on the way back. With 2 mins recovery at the top, it was 62 mins. 29th - Developed a sore tendon in the left foot. 3 miles very easy jogging. 30th - rest July 1st - rest 2nd - rest 3rd - very light tryout of foot (it held OK) 4th - inter-club cross country, 5 miles The race was run at Kalinga, a course with which I was unfamiliar. It was rough and a lot of water was lying on the track. I just ran and tried to force myself to keep up a good pace, but every time I struck a rough patch I slowed down. At the start I was just hanging on to Ian Murray, but he got away and near the end of the first 2 miles circuit (the race was 1,2,2) Al Jones caught me. I hung onto him almost till the end but he left me on the rugh ground. An added handicap was the brisk westerly wind. I struggled home somehow, with my sore tendon slightly aggravated. Time: 29:33 Place: 7th on the whole, 6th in the inter-club (behind Irwin, Smith, Marsh, Murray and Jones) Lesson: I will have to learn (a) to run better on rough country (b) to run round pegs. 5th - The Mt Coot-tha run, with Moresby, Al, Ian, Clem Parry, and Peter Moy. It was easy till the hill when of course cut-throat tactics came to the fore. Coming back there was a lot of swapping places. Time: 62:45. Easy except for the last hill. 6th - 2 miles very easy 7th - 7 x 440 yds (63 v 1 min) 8th - 7 x 440 yds (63 v 1 min) 9th - 3 miles rough and practice with pegs 10th - 1 1/4 hours very easy running and walking 11th - no training (bad cold all week) 12th - Mt Coot-tha with Moresby and Al. Although slower than usual (62:45) it felt very much harder, possibly because of my cold. 13th - 5 x 660 yds (1:42 v 1 min) 14th - 7 miles fairly fast (the last 5 in about 27 min against a strong wind). This was the run to restore completely my failing self-confidence. (It didn't hurt like a race, although in sandshoes on a wet track and against the wind, and it was faster than race speed.) 15th - 6 x 660 yds (1:40- v 3 x walk 220 + 2 x walk 660). They felt quite easy. 16th - A few miles of cornering, hurdling, rough ground, and bursts. 17th - no training 18th - Inter-club cross country, 6 miles Back on the more familiar St Lucia course, I had a much better preparation for this race. I started off in a little group with Jack Marsh, Al Jones and Ian Murray ahead and Jim Stephenson behind. I passed the three-mile mark in 16:39 and surprisingly easily. Stephenson passed me but I passed Al Jones and later Jack Marsh. At the end I was half a minute clear of Jack with Ian a few seconds ahead. Having nothing to gain by passing Ian, I didn't use the burst I was capable of. The whole race was considerably easier than Kalinga, and coupled with the faster speed, was very encouraging. Time: 33:41. Place: 5th (behind Irwin, Smith, Stephenson and Murray). 19th - no training 20th - no training 21st - 4 x 660 (1:40-, jog 220 recovery) 22nd - 7 x 440 (62 v walk 110) 23rd - Mt Coot-tha alone (an easy 66:20) 24th - 5 x 660 (1:40-, jog 220 recovery) 25th - no training 26th - Mt Coot-tha witih Moresby, Al, and Ray. Although I felt weak in the legs it was all fairly easy and I was with Moresby at the top. Time 62:50. 27th - no training 28th - 5 miles fairly easy with Tony (28:20) 29th - 2 x 3/4 mile time trials (approx. 3:31 and 3:26 v 10 mins) 30th - 3 miles striding 31st - no training Aug. 1st - Novice championship, 5 miles A bad mental atmosphere - a long postponement, and worse a change of course such that I had no idea where to go. There was also a strong wind. However Ian Murray and Peter Moy didn't run. The start was very slow, with no-one wanting to take the lead and get lost. However I finally had to put on a bit of pace. After the two-mile course I took a wrong turn and lost fifty yards or more, allowing Miles Vass to catch me. Fortunately I re-passed him very easily. Although it was a mental killer, it was physically quite easy and I finished 200 yards clear of Vass to win the title in 29:28, a fair time considering the conditions. Aug. 2nd - no training 3rd - 7 x 660 (1:40- v jog 220 in track shoes) 4th - 6 x 440 (61 v 4 mins) 5th - 6 miles with Tony (34:00) 6th - no training 7th - no training 8th - 4 x 880 (2:16 v 4 mins) 9th - no training 10th - 2 laps Prince Henry's Drive (31:15) 11th - half hour walking and jogging at 5 min mile pace (880s) 12th - fast 2 miles (10:16 in windy conditions; an encouraging run) + 9 x 440 yds (approx. 70- v walk 220 with Michael Klose). A good day. 13th - 18th - no training; got some exercise swimming, running in sand, rowing, etc. 19th - 3/4 mile (3:26) + 1 1/2 miles (fast 440, slow 440) 20th - 5 miles fairly easy running with bursts 21st - no training 22nd - Inter-Varsity Cross Country, Sydney (Centennial Park): 10km The course was extremely sandy and much tougher than St Lucia; the weather was very hot for the time and place. I had previously been over the course twice to ensure I wouldn't get lost, and decided to run in bare feet. I found the race surprisingly easy, particularly the first two miles, considering the final time (35:05.5; the first 5km took 17:04). My running was more even than the minute discrepancy in laps indicates; I started about 20th, was 10th after two miles, and finished 8th. A very encouraging race (equivalent to 33:52 for 6 miles) and beating John Manuel is a noteworthy achievement. Aug. 23rd - no training 24th - no training 25th - 6 x 660 yds (jog 220 recovery; very strong wind) 26th - 2 x 3/4 mile fast (3:27) 27th - 6 x 660 yds (fast, jog 220 recovery) + 6 x 440 yds (65-70, walk 440 recovery) 28th - no training 29th - T.G.S. house carnival, unofficial: races 880yds, 1 mile. In the 880 yds I paced Michael Klose round a fairly fast first lap then came home all by myself in 2:6.5, a satisfying time for the lack of effort. In the mile I started slowly with Michael again but opened up over the last two laps; 400 yards out I had lapped all the rest of the field and I came home in 4:54. These two runs, almost completely effortless, are encouraging for later in the season, particularly the 880. Aug. 30th - no training 31st - 5 miles fartlek Sep. 1st - 6 x 660 yds (1:37(?) v jog 220) 2nd - 3/4 mile unpaced time trial (3:14.0(!), laps 64,65,65. Felt quite easy.) 3rd - 3 x 1 mile (4:45, 4:43, 4:55 v 7 mins) 4th - 20 x 220 yds (jog 110 recovery) 5th - 2 miles easy 6th - 880 yds time trial at Lang Park (for Tony Blue) The track was perfect and the weather warm but slightly windy. At the start I didn't get badly boxed in and ran the whole race at mostly even pace, doing the first 220 in 28.5. I was running fourth; I caught Al Jones with 220 to go (1:28.5). I was expecting Paul Morgan to take me in the straight, so when Al and Phillips (C.E.G.S.) just scraped past me I didn't retaliate. Although only finishing 5th I was ahead of Moresby Smith and Paul Morgan. My time was a great 1:58.7. The race hurt me more than usual in this distance but still not badly. Sep. 7th - (M) 3 miles with Al (easy) 8th - (M) 3 miles with Al (A) 10 x 440 yds (all walk 110 recovery) 9th - (M) 3 miles with Al (A) 3 miles (abut 16:15) track 10th - 2 x 440 yds (60- v 3 mins) 11th - no training (in anticipation of race next day) 12th - 3 miles jogging 13th - Mt Coot-that alone in a remarkably easy 60:30. 14th - 3 miles and 1 1/2 miles cross-country 15th - (M) 3 miles course with Al (21 mins) (A) 6 x 660 (jog 220 recovery; bare feet) 16th - 8 x 440 yds (64 v walk 110) 17th - no training 18th - no training 19th - 4-way carnival at T.G.S. Track: slightly soft and irregular; slower than St Lucia or Lang Park. 880: I got a terrible start from lane 2 and became completely boxed in. I had to fall back to second last and run a lane wide around the first two bends to make up ground. I almost caught Al and Moresby but just didn't have the incentive to forcce myself hard and finished 3rd in 2:03.00. Mile (2 1/4 hours later): Ian cracked on the pace in the first lap, going through in 61; I alone went out after him. At no stage did the race hurt, and at no stage did I try to catch him, although I could have struck powerfully in the third lap; but I contented myself with a fast even pace to finish 2nd in 4:30.8 (laps 65, 69, 69, 68). 20th - 3/4 hour easy running (cramp in calf) 21st - 4 x 880 yds (2:10 v 5 mins) 22nd - 8 x 440 yds (65 v walk 110) 23rd - 5 x 660 yds (1:40 v walk 220) 24th - no training 25th - no training 26th - 3-say carnival at St Lucia Track good, wind strong. Mile: The withdrawal of Steve Archer (C.E.G.S.) reduced my incentive, as he had run a 4:26 the previoius week. However, Moresby did run, ostensibly to pace me. I set the pace all the way, and Moresby just sat on me. I tried to shake him off in the third lap, but he stuck with me and just edged past me in the straight. In spite of the wind, the race felt surprsingly easy all the way, permitting use of pace judgment. Place: 2nd Time: 4:23.7 Laps: 65, 66, 69, 64. 27th - 1 1/2 hour run (road) 28th - 6 x 660 yds (easy v jog 220) 29th - no training 30th - 1 1/2 miles time trial (7:04) Oct. 1st - 5 x 440 yds (faster? v walk 110) 2nd - no training 3rd - no training 4th - Mt Coot-tha via Russell Ter. Light wind. Track good. Ric Clarke led us for the first two laps. I followed him but after 550 Moresby passed me. Then Irwin tried to pass and Stephenson went inside me, so I had to pass Moresby again coming into the back straight. After 880, Ric pulled out and then Moresby and Irwin went past. I found myself struggling in the third lap and all the way to the tape. The race was much harder than my mile three weeks ago, but faster: Time: 4:22.8 Place: 3rd Laps: 65, 64, 68, 66 Inter-club medley relay open (880 yds) My main opponent in this race was Jim Stephenson. I was feeling so light and loose after the mile that I found it hard to constrain myself to the pace which I let him set. With 280 yards to go I passed himl Although he levelled and scraped past me in the straight (where it hit me for the first time in the race and I tried just to hang on) I had the inside lane and sent our quarter-miler Al Jones away to a good start, resulting in an easy win for the team in 3:36.4. My own time was an incredibly fast (considering how it felt) 1:58.5. 18th - (M) 2 miles easy (A) 2 x (8 x 220 yds) (jog 220 recovery; 4 mins rest between blocks. 1st block 29, 2nd faster.) 19th - Moresby's fartlek course (35 1/2 mins) 20th - no training 21st - 2 miles time trial in 9:46 (approx. laps 70, 73, 74, 74, 75, 75, 74, 71) 22nd - no training 23rd - no training 24th - Inter-club 3 miles open There was a fairly strong breeze blowing but the track and temperature were ideal. At the start. Moy paced Irwin for two laps before pulling out. From then on, Irwin was well ahead all the way. I was next behind them, running extremely easily all the way. I came home second in 14:56.2 behind Irwin's State record. Although I hadn't been able to force myself hard in the race, I wasn't at all tired afterwards. 25th - easy 3 miles cross country (and college "brawl") 26th - no training 27th - no training (sick) 28th - 2 x 3/4 mile (3:30 v 5 mins) 29th - no training 30th - no training 31st - no training (sick again) Nov. 1st - 2 miles (9:43), 10 mins recovery, and 6 x 220 yds (jog 220 recovery) with Moresby 2nd - no training 3rd - 6 miles road easily in 36:20 4th - no training 5th - no training 6th - no training 7th - Inter-club 3 miles open Before the race I was feeling slightly off colour. I ran, and the Toowong mob paced me through a fast first mile (3/4 in 3:37). At this stage Irwin was well ahead and Parry just ahead. However, they pulled away and I found myself struggling hard to finish in a slow but painful 3rd position in 15:18. 8th - 7 x 440 yds (not too fast v jog or walk 220) and 2 miles in 11:15. It hurt much more than it should have. I don't know whch is more to blame, the wog that I had last week or the resulting lack of training, but I am having a lean period. I will not have any more hard races until after Christmas if possible. 9th-13th - no training 14th - Inter-club 440 yds open (1st division) I had only just arrived and didn't have time to warm up before the race. I ran quite strongly but below my capabilities until the straight when a strong headwind slowed me right down. I finished last but in a reasonable 55.0. 100 yds open (2nd division) I proved conclusively that because of my slow start I can't give of my best in a hunndred. Against the wind I finished last in 11.8. Mile handicap open I started off 39 seconds. Bt this time I was pretty tired but rounded up most of the field ahead of me in the third lap. In the fourth lap Parry paced me home and I was too tired to put much into it. I finished 5th in an actual time of 4:33 within four seconds of the winner Jim Woodriff and could have easily won if I had saved myself for the race. Medley relay (2nd division) The officials with characteristic stupidity put our second team in the second division with a few useless under 15 teams. To get a place we had to do a fast time solo but I had to push myself very hard to get a 2:06, I was so tired. Our time was only 0.7 seconds behind the second placegetters, a margin we could have made up easily with the opposition in the first division against us. I decided not to try any more of these four-event days. 15th - 5 x 660 yds (1:40 v walk 220). Hard. 16th - no training 17th - 6 miles road 18th - no training 19th - no training 20th - no training 21st - Inter-club Weather very hot; wind moderate to strong. 880 yds open A bad start forced me to run wide for the first lap. Although the race didn't hurt I finished a disappointing 6th in 2:05.3. (Laps 63, 62.) 3 mile handicap open Starting from what I thought an impossible handicap, I didn't try. I fell into a slow rhythm but in the 5th and 7th laps I played around with my pace. At the end I felt horrible but must have had more strength left than I thought as although extremely hot I lifted the pace and sprinted Al Jones home, just losing to him. My overall place was 3rd and time a very slow 16:05.2. Laps 76.5, 77.5, 80, 81.5, 76.5, 85, 80, 86, 88.5, 83.5, 82, 68. miles 5:15.5, 5:27.5, 5:22. I learned today how poor my condition actually is. I am giving up hard races now until the new year and concentrating on a new build-up. 22nd - no training 23rd - half hour beach running (8 long bursts) 24th - half hour beach running (4 longer bursts) 25th - no training 26th - half hour golf course running (fartlek and even) Nov. 27th-Dec. 12th - no training (except 1 1/4 hours even running on Dec. 6th) with some exercise from surfing and walking. I started too slow and was very badly boxed i. I managed to break out coming into the first straight but only managed an easy 4th in 2:04.8. 10th - Inter club 440 yds open After a very tiring trip down, I thought I was going faster but finished a bad 4th out of 4 in 57.0. This run showed how much I need speed work. 11th - 3 x 660 yds road (sightly uphill) fast 12th - unpaced mile (4:40) and 88- (2:23) on very rough Gold Park track 13th - 4 x 440 yds (59.4, 60.2, 60.6, 61.0 v jog 2 laps) 14th - no training 15th - no training 16th - Inter-clubb mile open An improvement over last week, but started too slowly and loafed. Cook took me in the 3rd lap but didn't get away and I unsuccessfully struck at him in the 4th lap. I could feel myself loafing and was so fresh at the finish that I later ran a 4 x 110 relay leg. Place: 4th Time: 4:31.2 Laps: 65, 67, 70, 69 17th - 8 x 440 yds (65.6 v walk 180 yds) 18th - 4 x 440 yds (63.1 v jog 400 yds) 19th - no training 20th - 3/4 mile time trial in 3:16.0 (laps 62, 67, 67). Started fast and found the last two a struggle. A good sign for the trials on Saturday. 21st - no training 22nd - no training 23rd - no training (1st day of trials cancelled due to rain) 24th - State team trials, 1 mile The track was dead and the wind fairly brisk but the sun was shining. None of my dangers ran in the race. I started off just behind Paul Maughan (the open and junior events were combined) and we went through the first lap in a fast 62.5. I expected him to be further ahead and subconsciously let him get away. Then I was on my own (Nobbs 11 seconds behind at the finish) and forced myself to a disappointing 4:26.6 in a race that didn't hurt (laps 62.5, 68.5, 70, 68.5) 25th - no training (storm) 26th - no training 27th - no training 28th - Mt Lofty (Mary St and 3 x new training track). The perfect training for strength in the legs. 29th - no training 30th - meet cancelled due to rain. 11 x 440 yds (66 v jog 440) with Moresby and Ian barefoot on soaked St Lucia track. 31st - no training Feb. 1st - 1 lap Prince Henry in about 14:45 (I intended to do 2 but got blisters) 2nd - no training 3rd - up Mt Lofty (Mary St) and 3 x Mt Lofty track. (Approximately, time for course 40 sec; pulse at top 180; pulse after 90 sec 150.) 4th - no training 5th - no training 6th - Got to Brisbane and was surprised to hear that I had been selected in the State team. Inter-club open mile A shocking race. It felt wrong from before the start. A bad start left me in the ruck, hopelessly trapped; in the second back straight, I slowed down where I could have passed. In spite of this, I went through in 2:11. Then I went to pieces. The wind in the straight felt like a gale in the 3rd and 4th laps. Also, the next man ahead (Ian Murray) broke contact and I was left to struggle home in a very poor 4:34.2 to finish 5th. Laps 64, 67, 71, 72. Probably my biggest mistake was losing contact, but being afraid of passing was also bad though excusable because of the 2:11 first half. 7th - 6 x 440 yds in 65.5 v jog 400 yds on rough oval. 8th - 2 x 880 yds (2:08 v jog 880 yds) 9th - no training 10th - Twilight meet at Lang Park. I was very tired after a lot of travelling and walking in the heat of the day. I started off with Maugham and his pacers who soon went off ahead. For the rest of the race I was running by myself although I gained ground on Brian Cook. (He beat me by about 2 1/2 secs altough I had gained the same amount on him in the last two laps.) Chasing him made made my last lap faster than it has been lately. Time: 4:29.1. Place: 3rd. Laps: 63, 67, 70, 69. 11th - no training (exhausted) 12th - no training 13th - Inter-club 880 yds open As usual, trapped after 50 yds, but went through in 60.5 lying 4th. In the second back straight I was passed by Bill Howley and Paul Maugham and finished 6th behind Brian Cook in 2:02.6. I felt far too tense in the second lap probably because of lack of good 880 speed work; but the race didn't hurt very much. Inter-club 3 miles open I started off sitting on Peter Moy and running quite comfortably. After about 4 laps I allowed him to break contact and after this of course I couldn't make myself keep up the pace, so I covered the eighth lap at a slightly faster stride and stopped. The run was very encouraging because had I been fresh I could have easily beaten both Peter Moy (who finished with Clem Parry in 15:05) and my own best time. The last lap, although completely effortless, compares favourably with the last laps of my recent miles. Time (2 miles) 10:06. Laps 72, 74, 75, 75, 80, 80, 80, 70. 14th - 3/4 mile + 1/2 mile (against fair breeze) v 3/4 mile jogging. 15th - no training 16th - 5 miles easy 17th - no training 18th - 4 miles easy v 5 mins v 8 x 1 lap (540 yds with 10 yds fast stride per lap) v 2 1/2 miles easy 19th - 2 x 1080 yds (2:39.2 and 2:35.5 v 3 3/4 mins slow jogging. An encouraging run. 20th - no training (Peter Moy won the Australian junior invitation 3 in a solo 14:54.) 21st In the morning I had a slight cold and sore throat (a burning feeling). Australian championships, 1 mile under 19 In warmup, felt to be running not as easily as usual. However, I took the lead from the outside (running round the field) soon after the start and took them through in a good easy 62. In the second lap, a few runners passed me easily. I missed a good chance to regain the lead in the back straight, and felt myself to be running badly, coming to the half mile 4th in 2:10. In the third lap I cracked. Most of the field passed me, leaving me third last out of eleven, and I struggled weakly on, finishing in 4:29.2. Place: 8th. Laps: 62, 68, 69, 70. When I finished, my throat soreness was much worse and I had a splitting headache which took twenty minutes to recover from. Comments: The conclusion I draw from the series of bad runs I have had lately is that although I have an excuse each tme, there must be an underlying reason. I think my winter repetition training was good for bringing me to a peak but didn't give me enough deep down condition to tide me over the lean period of sickness and holidays that followed. Next winter, more marathon training. 22nd - no training 23rd - 5 miles easy 24th - no training 25th - 1 mile in 4:53 (it set out to be a 1 1/2 mile time trial but I gave it away because it was so slow). 26th - no training All this week I have been dead tired. 27th - Inter-club 1 mile open Still very tired but feeling better than usual after my warm up. I was up with the field in the first lap but they got a break on me in my low second lap. In the third lap, coming into the straight I passed Ross Girdham and followed Peter Busby home to come 6th. I was lethargic but the time 4:33.0 by no means physically tired me. Not exactly encouraging but probably my best for some time. Laps: 65, 70, 69, 69. 28th - 5 miles hilly country (easy) Mar. 1st - no training 2nd - 3/4 mil in 3:18.8 (couuldn't go faster) with Ian and Moresby. Laps 64, 67, 68. 3rd - 3/4 mile unpaced in about 3:20 4th - no training 5th - no training 6th - Queensland championships, 1 mile U19 Peter Moy and Brian Cook set the initial pace which was quite easy. In the third lap the drew away from me and after losing them (the old trouble - couldn't accelerate) I ran just to secure my 3rd place which I did comfortably in 4:31.2. Laps: 66, 68, 69, 68. 7th - Queensland championships, 2 miles U19 Peter Moy sat on my shoulder for the first lap then set his own pace. I stuck to hm for six laps but he broke away to win by 10 seconds. Once again the annoying feeling that I didn't get the best out of myself, but I probably couldn't have beaten him anyway as his last lap was 5 secs faster than mine. Time: 9:43. Place: 2nd. Laps: 72, 71.5, 72, 73, 72, 73, 75.5, 74. 8th - 12th - no training 13th - Inter-club 880 yds open, 2nd division From the start, Smith (T) took the lead and I duelled with him for it, taking it after a 62 first lap. Coming into the back straight, Smith and another Toowong runner accelerated but didn't get away, although I had to run wide on the last bend to avoid beng boxed in. In the straight, Peter Busby came through the inside and got ahead of me although I passed the other Toowong runner. Ten yards from the tape Norm Ellis edged past giving me 4th. (The times of the first five ranged from 2:03.5 to 2:04.7. Mine was 2:04.5, laps 62, 62.5.) Inter-club 3 miles open Not feeling the best, I started at a 76-77 pace after Irwn, Parry and Busby cleared out. Moresby Smith came up after about four laps and we alternated pace for a couple of laps, but I couldn't be bothered keeping up and slowed right down, gettng 5th in 15:52.0. Laps 76.5, 75.5, 77, 77.5, 79.5, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 84.5, 81.5. Afterwards I did 3 miles easy with Ross Girdham. My great decline in performances lately has convinced me to have a break until I start my winter build-up. I hope to do 2 days a week during this break, of which at least one will be a long run. Mar. 14th - an easy 7 miles 15th and 16th - no training 17th - Mt Coot-tha right round in 1:31:00 (splits at summit and kiosk 41, 17, 33) 18th-20th - no training 21st - 8 x 220yds (jog 220 recovery) 22nd-30th - no training 31st - 11 miles St Lucia cross-country Apr. 1st - 1/2, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 mile v jog 1/2 mile 2nd and 3rd - no training 4th - 4 x 440 yds (56.5, 59, 63, 65 v jog 880) 5th - Fartlek course with Ian 6th - no training 7th - 4 x 1000-1100 yds (jog same distance recovery) 8th - 1 hour road 9th-16th - no training 17th - 5 mile road race, Gladstone After sitting round in the heat all day, I was back marker in the open handicap, 3/4 min behind Stephenson, Duffy and Busby. I was picking up the leaders for 2 miles then developed a stitch and pulled out after 2 3/4 miles. 18th-20th - no training 21st - Fartlek course (I found it very tiring) 22nd - complete break until: Aug. 1st - Mt Coot-tha to momument and back in 55:39. The reason for starting training again is I.V. in two weeks. 2nd - 1 1/2 hour road running 3rd - 7 miles at 7 1/2 min/mile pace 4th - Moresby's fartlek course (alone) 5th - about 5 miles cross-country 6th-7th - nothing 8th - 2 x Long St hill (7:55 and 8:30) 9th - nothing (had a medical check-up and was OK'd) 10th - 2 x Prince Henry's Drive in an encouraging 32:10 (compare 10/8/64 and 13,15/12/64) 11th - 1 x Long St hill (8:15). Broke down in 2nd one due to non-response of legs. 12th-13th - rest. 14th - Inter-Varsity cross-country, 10km I started off at what I thought was a reasonable pace, well back in the field. I could have run much faster but for lack of wind: after about 2 miles I was breathing in and out on consecutive strides all the way. The last half became a duel with another runner - I led him most of the way but he passed me in one of my toughest sprint finishes. Place: 25th (out of 36) Time unknown (3 miles in 17:52) 15th-19th - nothing 20th-25th - attended T.G.S. atheltics camp as a coach. Only training apart from a few 440s was 4 1/2 miles (4 laps of school) on 21st. 26th-Sep. 1st - nothing. Sep. 2nd - 8 x 1 lap of No 1 oval, St Lucia (v 1/4 lap walk) 3rd-4th - nothing 5th - 2 x 440 (63, 64 v walk 300 yds) 6th - 880 in about 2:09 + 4 x 440 v walk 110 + about 2 miles easy. Stitch after finishing last 440. 7th - 3 miles road in the rain in about 18:10. 8th (10:30am) 8 x 440 yds (v walk 110; no watch; I think they slowed but I had effort if not pace left for the last. (afternoon) 4 miles fartlek + 1 mile easy track + 2 1/2 miles fartlek 9th (M) 5 x 660 yds v walk 220 (second in about 1:48) 10th-11th - nothing 12th - 8 x 220 yds v jog 220 (very easy) 13th - 4 x 880 yds v 2 laps walk or jog + 2 x 330 yds v walk 110 + 10 x Refec. hill, and still felt like doing more 14th - time trials - 660 (1:34.2) and 3/4 mile (3:40.5) v half-hour. Felt heavy after yesterday. 15th - rest (after yesterday) 16th - 4 x 440 yds (59, 6, 59, 60 v 2 aps jog-walk in 6 min) 17th - nothing 18th - meet against Toowoomba schools, 1 mile I was just too lazy or something to force even a little effort out of myself. Dropped back from 2nd to 5th in the first back straight (behind Steve Archer, Ray Wyatt, peter Busby and Jack Marsh). Passed Jack into the 4th lap but he passed me in the back straight. Jogged to the finish in 4:44.0 (laps 66, 72, 74, 72) 19th-25th - no training, due to a very heavy cold 26th - 2 2/3 miles medium pace (intended to do 3 but got a stitch) 27th - Fartlek course (back way) 28th - 10 x 1 lap No 1 oval v walk 1/4 lap. 29th - 4 miles fartlek 30th- Oct. 2nd - nothing Oct. 3rd - Mt Coot-tha in about 65 mins (first half easier than second) 4th - 10 laps of No 1 oval. Gave up through boredom though not at all tired. 5th - nothing (rain) 6th - Fartlek course + 880. (Felt sick and slow at start but warmed up after halfway.) 7th - nothing 8th - 6 x 1 lap No 1 oval v walk 1/4 lap. Faster than previously. 9th-10th - nothing 11th - Mt Coot-tha back way in 92 mins (splits 41, 19, 32). No trouble at all and no after-effects except for legs. 12th - nothing 13th - 12 laps No 1 oval. Finished strongly. 14th - For the first time, fartlek+. Took the edge off me! 15th - nothing 16th - Inter-club 200m hurdles. Ran it for a joke. Had no effect except to make me very sore. Time 32.2. Inter-club 1500m Ran dead all the way. With no excessive effort (although I couldn't go any faster) finished 11th in 4:244.0. (Laps approx. 45, 72, ?) Very discouraging to finish this far back even considering conditions. 17th-18th - nothing 19th - 14 laps No 1 oval 20th - Fartlek+ 21st-25th - nothing (Unfortunate!) 26th - 10 x 1 lap No 2 oval v walk 1/4 lap. 27th - 20 x 100 yds run-throughs (up and down) + about 2 miles fartlek. (Slowed me a lot.) 28th - Fartlek+ 29th - 11 laps No 1 oval (3 1/4 miles*) in 17:09 (a 15:50- 3 miles) 30th - nothing Nov. 1st - 7 miles (to ridge, Mt Coot-tha and back) very badly. Comparison with last year's form convinced me that it is very probably the effect of exams. No training until recommenced on Dec. 14th - 1 lap Prince Henry's Drive from home (a gut-knotter). Stopped at Webb Park hill on the way back. 16th - 1 lap Prince Henry's Drive from home. Much easier though stiff early. 17th - 2 laps Prince Henry's Drive from home. Encouraging 36 1/2 mins for circuit. 18th - 1 lap Prince Henry's Drive from home. Didn't feel like running. 20th - to Middle Ridge oval and back (5 miles), last 3/4 hard. 22nd - Mt Kynoch (13 miles) in 95 mins. Easy on way out but tough on way back. 24th - 3 x Long St. (8:31, 8:30, 8:44). 26th - 3 laps Prince Henry's Drive in about 55 mins. 27th - Mary St. and 3 x Mt Lofty track. 29th - attempted 2 laps Prince Henry's Drive against the clock. Stopped after one in 16:21. 1966: Jan. 3rd - A slow night run of 2 laps Prince Henry's Drive (continous from hoome). 4th - 2 x Long St. (7:56, 8:04). 5th - Mt Kynoch, 92:50. 7th - 10 x lap Middle Ridge oval v 1/4 lap in 26:23. Barefoot and quite easy. 8th - Warmed up for a leg of the 4 x 1500m relay but didn't have to run. 10th - 5 miles track in 28:44. 11th - 2 x Long St. (7:44, 7:55). Missed next 3 days through illness. 15th - Inter-club 1500m open The first two laps were quite easy; in them I made up a lot of places. In the third I felt short of wind and was running slower but passed Hodge into 3rd place, but was juust passed in a slow last lap to finish 4th in 4:21 (laps 48, 69, 72, 72). 16th - nearly knocked myself out starting Mt Kynoch. 17th - Attempted Mt Kynoch. Turned back after divided road end past Downlands but came home fast with a cyclist for pacer. (About 70 mins.) 18th - 2 x Long St. (7:08, 7:39). The figures speak for themselves. 19th - Felt very sluggish. Attempted 5 miles; did about 2, and jogged 2 1/2 with Ian Murray. 20th - 7-8 miles easy road running (2 bursts). 22nd - State 10000m title abandoned due to rain. Ran Mt Kynoch in an 86min. blinder in thick fog. 23rd - Discovered that the State title had bee run yesterday. 24th - Attempted Mt Kyoch; rain forced me to switch to fairly easy fartlek. 25th - 10 x 1 lap T.G.S. oval v 1/4 lap walk. 26th - Had to spend the day working. 27th - Weak from stomach trouble and stiff. Mary St. and 4 x Mt Lofty track. 28th - Hot day. Ran Mt Kynoch in 85:50. (Too fast early, exahusted myself.) That night, I contracted a bad bilious attack which kept me out until Feb. 1st - Still weak, walked a few miles. Mentally in top shape. 3rd - 1 hour running (slow). Soon after start, calves became sore. 4th - To College Heights and back, not too fast. Was stopped about half way with stomach pains. 5th - Warmed up for 5000m inter-club but didn't run due to pouring rain. Intended to run 2 laps Prince Henry's Drive at 10pm but scrapped this as I was mad at losing my watch. 6th - Intended to do track work but it rained so I did Mt Kynoch in 86:10 (easy except for North St.) A creditable run. Stiffness gone. 7th - 880, 1100, 660, repeat v 1 1/2 laps jogging (and walking), and two slow 440s (75). Second 880 was 2:28. Watch recovered. 8th - Trip to Brisbane in the morning. 40 mins fartlek in Queen's Park and easy 3 miles with two hard bursts in afternoon. 9th - 10 x 440 yds v walk 110 (4) or 220 (5) (they felt fast - too fast for walk 110 recooveries), plus easy 2 miles. 10th - After a morning's painting, ran 1 1/2 x Long St. (First in 7:21). May have finished 2nd but for race on Saturday. I may have been training too hard this week. 11th - nothing. 12th - Inter-club 1500m, Lang Park. Before the race I felt O.K. bit withut usual fire. During an uneventful race I knew I was running slowly but couldn't speed up. Passed by Freeland and another Tooowong runner coming into 3rd back straight and bu another T. runner coming into 4th back straight. I kicked with 330yds to go and passed Hodge, nearly passing the Toowong runner, who held me off. I finished about 7th in a slow 4:23.5. Laps 48, 73, 71, 71.5. Russelll Duigan said afterwards I looked bad, especially in shoulder sway. 13th - nothing. 14th - 660 time trial in a very easy 1:30.8, and 1 mile jogging, 1 mile sprint-jogs and 1 mile easy running. 15th - ALthough not feeling like a time trial, ran two laps Prince Henry. 1t in about 15:45; abandoned time trial halfway round 2nd lap, and very fatigued on hills, but time a reasonable 32:20. 16th - felt weak but ran 2 miles in 10:21 (first mile about 5:05). 17th - nothing 18th - Walked round T.G.S. cross-country course, running easily up Tourist Rd. and hard up the Old Toll Bar. I have made several excuses for light training this week (one of which is experiment with one hard and one light week until State titles) but today did leave me weak. 19th - Inter-club 800m open I was forced to run about a lane wide around the first bend at the shoulder of two T.E.E.S. runners while Dick Freeland built up a good lead. First lap was a good 60. In the second I was battling. Holden passed me with 350 yards to go, and I finished 3rd in a slow 2:04.8 (laps 60,65). Inter-club 5000m open Started 40 minutes after the 800m start. I had talked myself into running easily and Crossthwaite who started with me drew away (later to pull out). With 6 laps to go I caught someone from T.E.E.S. and Hodge 1 1/2 laps later. In the 7th, 8th, 10th, 12th and 13th laps I was able to increase effort if not speed in back straight and passed or lapped a few more (although Irwin and Parry both lapped me). Finished 5th in slow 16:48 wth promise of much better races in future (split miles 5:18, 5:28, 5:28). Although these were both slower than time trials of last week I think a barrier has been broken in the 5000 (finishing after running 800 as I must do in the Freshers' and Club titles). It is to be hoped that times will tumble from now. Entered State titles: open 1500m and 5000m 20th - 4 x 880 yds (2:19, 2:21.2, 2:16.7, 2:21.5 v 4 1/2 mins jogging). Last one in pouring rain. 21st - Mt Kynoch in easy (except North St) 85:30 22nd - nothing 23rd - 2 x Long St (7:19, 7:40) and easy run round to T.G.S. and back. 24th - 3/4 mile in 3:24.1 + 1 mile sprint-jogs 25th - nothing 26th - Inter-club 1500m open Boxed in and as a result slowed at start: I ran a bit wide round the first bend. Passed one in the straight and had to run almost a lane wide to move up several places to 4th behind Irwin, Jack Marsh and Ian Murray and ahead of a Toowong runner. After about 1/2 lap of this those ahead broke contact. The T. runner stuck to me and struck with 330 to go but I kicked and he faded without ever catching me. For the rest of the race I was on my own and finished 4th in an encouraging 4:13.5. Laps 47, 68, 70.5, 68. A good morale booster. 27th - Fartlek+ with a 5-minute break in the middle. 28th - 2 miles in 10:10 (felt heavy) Mar. 1st - nothing 2nd - 4 x 1 lap No 2 oval U of Q fast v jog 2 laps. 3rd - nothing 4th - 1 1/2 miles easy with two run-throughs. 5th - State titles, 1500m open A mass withdrawal left Peter Moy as my only serious rival. Boxed in at the start, I had moved up to second by the end of the first straight (we were running 2 lanes inside the 440 track). On the bend a Dalby runner passed me but I regained second place in the straight with Peter Moy going away. For the rest of the race he continued going away to win by 11 1/2 seconds. In the last back straight, cheering for two T.E.E.S. runners caused me to put on speed but I finished well clear. Place: 2nd. Time: 4:14.0. Laps: 53, 66, 69, 66 (equivalent to roughly 45.5, 68.5, 71.5, 68.5). A quite easy lazy run. I now doubt whether an easy week before a race is of positive value, particularly when (as now) I am short on speed work. 6th - State titles, 5000m open. A much stronger field than yesterday. At the start, I was ahead of Clem Parry who passed me leaving me last, until I passed Peter Stanton (the Toowong runner who had shadowed me last week). He again stuck to me for about 6 laps but by applying pressure in the back straight of each lap I lost him. Then I caught Jack Marsh and passed him easily with about 3 laps to go. I finished 5th in 15:57.3 with the remarkably even miles of 5:05, 5:08 and 5:11. The whole run was very easy and it seems that I must bring out my best over this distance this season. 7th - nothing 8th - Mt Coot-tha kiosk. I ran to break in new road shoes. Reached the top in an easy 32 but had to stop on the way back. Then 3 x 330yds fast v walk 550 with Don Kerr. 9th - 10 x 1 lap No 2 oval v walk 1/4 lap. Legs heavy and non-responsive after yesterday. 10th - fast 660 (roughly 1:30) + jg 1 1/2 laps v 3 x 220 yds fast with Don (v jog 220). Legs still heavy but better. 11th - nothing 12th - Inter-club 800m open I finished third but I could have won. The race was run 15 minutes before the scheduled starting time giving me insufficient time to warm up. I didn't get badly boxed in but I had to run wide on the first two bends in moving up to fourth behind Ross Girdham, a Mayne runner, and Peter Busby. I passed Peter on the third bend. In the back straight the pace slowed, but I was trapped, and in breaking out had to run wide (again). I held off a challenge by Holden and passed Girdham gaining 3rd place i 2:04.2. (Incidentally, the track was under water in places.) Not a hard race but it should be a lesson. Afterwards, did a few miles of tough cross-country on Mt Coot-tha at easy pace with Ross Girdham and others. 13th - 8 x 440 yds v walk 110 (with Don for the last three) + short rest + 220 with Don + 1 mile jogging. Decided to experiment with twice-a-day training. (?) 14th - 6 x 660 yds (about 1:44) v walk 220 with Don. 15th - Fartlek + 880. 16th (2pm) - 10 x 440 yds (about 65) v walk 220, 8 1/2 with Don. Cold coming on. 17th - Bad throat. 3 1/4 miles* on No 1 oval in great 16:27 (about 15:10 for 3 miles). 18th - Some easy running and 15 x 80 yd sprints. 19th - nothing. 20th - fairly easy Mt Coot-tha in 63 mins. 21st - nothing (rain) 22nd - Fartlek+. Finished fast and fairly fresh. 23rd (2pm) - 5 x 440 yds v walk 220 with Don. Last two fast. 24th - 3 1/4 miles* in great easy 16:10 (about 14:55 for 3 miles) 25th-26th - nothing 27th (11am) - 10 x 1 lap No 1 oval v walk 1/4 lap. 28th - 660 fast with Ivan Affleck + 6 x 330 yds v walk 110 with Don. 29th - 4 x 880 yds (2:13.2, 2:15.5, 2:15.1, 2:16.1 v jog 2 laps in 5 mins) 30th (2pm) - 10 x 440 yds with Don. Reasonably easy but killed him. 31st - 3/4 time trial with Don in slow 3:17.5. Apr. 1st - nothing 2nd - 2 miles slow running and jogging with 2 stride-throughs 3rd - Freshers' titles, 1 mile open Warm-up felt bad - sllightly sick and compulsively yawning before the race. After running round the field, I took the lead from Steve Archer and held it till he regained it in the 3rd back straight. However, I didn't go fast enough (laps 65, 69) (I seemed afraid of leading) and didn't retailate hard enough when he took me. In the final straight Peter Busby took me and he and Steve went on to win by two seconds as I had no sprint. Final time 4:30.8; place: 3rd; laps 65, 69, 69, 68. A bad race for the start of such a important season, but it was probably an off day. However it clearly points the need for more speed work. 4th - 4 x 660 with Don (1:38, 1:36, 1:38, 1:42 v walk 220). Same symptoms as yesterday, but it killed Don. 5th (9;30pm) - 660 time trial with Sam Moore in 1:28.0. He beat me easily (1:23.1) as I was tired in the straight. (First 220 was 27.) 6th - 10 x 440 v walk 220 with Don. 7th (1pm) - 4 x 440 (58.4, 60.7, 58.7, 61.0) v jog 880 in 5 mins in heat and with fair wind. 8th - nothing 9th - Mulgowie meet. Track loose and not level; wind brisk and against us up the hill. 440 yds - stuck behind Silcock and Ballinger until near the top of the hill in the loosest part (110 to go) when they left me. My time was 58.5. 880 yds - I was the only serious competitor. Ivan Affleck paced me through a good 60 first lap and then Pete Krause followed me. However, the track, hill and wind took their toll and I finished in 2:06.3. For this I won half a trophy (shared some glasses with Richard Silcock). 10th - nothing 11th - Southbrook meet. Track similar to Mulgowe but worse. Wind with us up the hill this time. 880 yds - I was annoyed at the organisation for keeping us waiting around all day. The race was a handicap and I was back marker but not too far back. I rounded up all but one in the first 220. He stayed with me until 550 and then dropped out, and I struggled home an easy winner. However the trophy was much less than promised. No time taken, but probably about the same as Mulgowie. 12th - 2 miles time trial in 9:48 (miles approx. 4:50, 4:58) + 6 x 330 yds v 110 walk. 13th (2pm) - 5 x 440 yds v walk 220 (2) or 440 (2) wth Don. Level until the last one when he ran away from me. 14th-15th - nothing. 16th - Freshers' titles. Light wind, track fair. 880 yds open: A better-than-usual start; by the first back straight I was behind Dick Freeland and loafing. Went through on 59.5. In the second back straight John Meehan went past (he and Dick filled 2nd and 1st in about 2 mins). Peter Busby edged me out by 0.1 wec, in the straight. Place 4th (overall), 3rd (Uni). Time 2:02.3. 3 miles open: Went through easily in 69. The pace felt quite easy for the first mile. I started out 3rd behind Steve Archer and Peter Busby. I passed Peter in the 3rd back straight; he and Ian passed me in the 3rd straight and I passed Ian in the 5th back straight. I got a stitch in the 6th lap which remained until the finish. I gradually slowed down finishing 3rd (well clear) in 15:15 (Steve 14:34; Pete 15:05). Laps 69, 73, 71, 75, 75, 75, 78, 78, 81, 81, 81, 77. Miles 4:49, 5:06. 5:20. Moral: no more 880s before 3 miles. (cf. 7//5/66, however!) 17th - nothing 18th - 5 x 660 yds v 220 yds walk (first two with Don). 19th (10am) - 3/4 mile time trial, College trials. (A dozen or so onlookers.) Ran the first lap solo in 60 (faster than it felt). In 2nd and 3rd laps had pacers but went through in 65, 66.5 to finish in 3:11.7. There must be a moral in the fact that I can run such good tme trials on skimpy warmup and crack up in the big races. 20th - a few run throughs. 21st 6 x 1 lap No 1 oval v walk 1/4 lap (fast - intended to0 do 4; got a stitch after 6). 22nd - 3 miles with Peter Busby. 23rd - nothing. 24th - Meet v U.N.E., Armidale Track hard and not too smooth, weather very cold, bleak and drizzling, wind moderate. 1 mile (10:45am) - Drew inside lane. I was boxed in at the start but took the lead after 150 yards from Peter Busby and the U.N.E. runner Alan Blackburn, who followed me until 220 to go. Then Blackburn sprinted away to win by 5 seconds. Busby dropped back to 15 seconds behind. Place: 2nd. Time: 4:29.2. Laps: 64, 69.5, 69.5, 66. The conditions didn't affect me too much. 3 miles (run in drizzling continuous rain) - I wasn't sure how I would last, so I let Peter Busby take the lead and followed him and Blackburn for 6 laps at very easy pace. Then I went past, and the order was myself, Blackburn, Busby, the pace the same. We were still very tightly bunched with a lap to go, but Blackburn again unleashed his withering finish to win by 8 seconds while I left Busby 10 secods further behind. I missed a personal best by only 0.3 seconds; under the conditions a pleasing run. Once again it wasn't too hard and I can improve a lot. Place: 2nd. Time: 14:56.5. Laps: 72, 77, 75, 75, 76, 75, 75, 75, 75, 76, 74, 71. Miles 4:59, 5:01, 4:56. 25th - Anzac Day meet, Armidale, 880 handicap Wind moderate; track under water and boggy. 3 competitors ran; I started 1 second behind Hodge (whom I passed within 220) and 5 seconds ahead of Moy (whom I never saw - he made little effort). My winning time of 2:11.5 (laps 63, 68.5) is not a true indication as the accuracy of the track was doubtful and its condition very poor. 26th - nothing (it rained, and we anticipated having I.C.C. athletics tomorrow) 27th - 9 x 440 yds v walk 110. Last one fast. Stopped by a stitch. 28th - 2 x 880 (2:11, 2:12) v jog 880. Intended to do more but gave up because of strong wind. 29th - nothing 30th - University Club titles, 1 mile Run in very strong wind. I had no trouble taking the lead and going through in 64. I held the lead until Steve Archer passed me in the 3rd back straight, going to an 8-yard lead which he maintained (without increasing it) until the finish although I was overtaking him with 150 to go. Peter Busby was with us until just into the lat lap when he dropped back 6 seconds. Place: 2nd. Time: 4:28.1. Laps: 64, 67, 68, 69. But for wind, last lap (and total time) would have been faster. May 1st - nothing 2nd - Labor Day Sports, 2 mile handicap Started off 2 minutes (Parry 1:50, Busby 1:55, Archer 2:10, Irwin 2:25). The track was 5 laps to tje miile. For 8 laps I just ran along at easy pace, speeding up a bit in the 9th. In the 10th, I challenged Busby, then he and Irwin broke away, fighting out the finish with a front marker. The last lap would have been considerably faster, but I shouldn't have let Irwin and Busby get away. I finished 4th, just out of a place. My time was a personal best of 9:25.4 which indicates that a good 3 miles time should be on the way. 3rd - 5 x 660 v walk 220. Faster than usual. 4th - 660 time trial (1:27.8: fast first 220) + 1 1/4 miles sprint-jogs. 5th - 4 x 440 yds (about 59, 61.5, 61, 59) v about 4 mins with Don. 6th - New spikes arrived. Ran a 440 and two run-throughs 7th - University Club titles, 880 yards (2:30pm) A bad race. Ran right through the pack at the start and got my new spikes slightly torn. Went through running 2nd in a slow 60, and could hardly run straight round the bend. Running 5th with 150 yards to go, I took off and caught Wayne Stevens, finishing 4th in 2:01.4. It's as well I didn't run any faster because of the 3 miles 2 hours later. University Club titles, 3 miles (4:30pm) Had to contend with Irwin, Archer and Busby. These three started off running 3 wide across the track. I stuck in behind them. The first mile was very fast (4:37; first lap 65). In the 4th straight I passed Peter Busby but Irwin and Archer were well ahead. I plugged on at nice even pace to within 10 yards of Archer (Irwin had cleared out by this time) in the 7th lap. I followed him for two laps, feeling for a weakness, then passed him and went on to beat him by the length of the straight, to win my first University title in a great personal best of 14:36.6. Laps (some interpolated): 65, 70, 70, 72, 75, 74, 76, 74, 74, 76, 76, 74. Miles 4:37, 4:59, 5:00. 8th - 3 x 660 v walk 220. Tired. 9th-10th - nothing. 11th - I.C.C. athletics. 880 yards: I had intended to do a fast first lap but in fact Scott (E) took the lead and went through in 57. I was running at his shoulder and ran wide for the 1st lap. I loafed around the next bend, then made the effort and passed hm, and although I had no speed left, I hung on to win in 2:00.6 ahead of Scott and Hooper. (Laps 57, 63.5). Mile: After delays in starting, we were away with Busby running and in the lead. I stayed on his shoulder, passing him in the 2nd back straight. He regained the lead in the second straight but I took it again in the third back straight and then ran away from him. A very easy race -- the finish was like a stride-through. However, the time was a good 4:25.5 to win. Laps 65, 67, 69, 64. 12th - 8 x 1 lap No 1 oval v walk 1/4 lap (last 3 fast) 13th - nothing 14th - 3 mile time trial. The only competitors were Pete Busby and myself. We alternated the lead for 5 fast laps (not according to prearranged plan) but then I started going away and merely had to hang on to win in 14:38.4, a creditable run considering the conditions. Laps were similar to last week, viz. 66, 69, 70, 72, 74.5, 74.5, 75.5, 76.5, 77, 77, 74.5, 72. Miles 4:37, 5:01, 5:00.5. 4 x 440 yards relay, 1st leg. As my usual 440, flat out but didn't hurt in 55.4. 15th-16th - nothing. 17th - 4 x 880 yds v jog 880 yds 18th - 4 x 640 yds v jog 200 yds 19th - a few miles easy and 3 laps stride-throughs and a fast 330. 20th - 3/4 mmile time trial in easy 3:14.0 with Don. 21st - nothing. 22nd - Tried out spikes on the McGillivray Park cinders track (the Adidas were too long). 2 x 330 at 3/4 pace + 1 mile at hard effort but disappointingly slow pace + 2 miles jogging. (Some jogging and stride-throughs in Kings Park in the morning.) 23rd - nothing 24th - Inter-Varsity 1500m 2nd heat (12:15pm) (5 to final) I started running about 3rd. The first lap was fairly slow. I took the lead coming into the first straight - Frank Larkins passed me coming into the second and then had the race to himself. I led the others until 50 yds to go when I relaxed and was passed by two runners to finish 4th in a fairly easy 4:04.5. The last two laps were at a faster stride but not flat out. Inter-Varsity 1500m final (3:20pm) The Doubell-Larkins duel caused a fast first lap (the leaders went through the first 400m in 59). I was up with the field for a lap but started dropping back (in 6th place) to lead the final 5. After two laps the pace was starting to tell, but it was affecting the others more than me and I caught the first bunch. I passed Alan Blackburn and this time held off his finish to come in 5th, scoring a point, in 4:02.6. I feel that I could have run faster and possibly a better place if I had poured on the effort in the 3rd lap. Laps: 45, 65, 69, 63.5. 25th - nothiing 26th - Felt a slight cold coming on in t he morning; I didn't feel as good in warmup as on Tuesday. Inter-Varsity 5000m After a couple of laps I was able to take third place behind Larkins and Robinson who were going away in front. The other Melbourne runner tried three times to pass me and slow down the pace but I went past him each time. Then Blackburn, a N.S.W. runner, and myself drew away from the rest with me leading, and so it remainde until the last lap although we picked up Robinson about a mile out. The finish was a replay of Armidale with Blackburn's last lap 60, mine 68, and the N.S.W. runner (who tripped with 180 yds to go) 8 seconds further back. My time was 15:03.6. The race wasn't too hard - I should have poured on full effort with 4 laps to go to try to break Blackburn. If I had done this we would probably have caught Larkins who tired badly at the finish. Laps (200m, then all 400m) were 32, 68, 71, 71, 73, 76, 73, 74, 72, 76, 73, 68. 1600m times 4:43, 4:55 and 4:54; 1000m in about 2:51, 3:02, 3:05, 3:06, 2:59. 27th - 20 x sandhill on Rottnest Island. 28th - nothing 29th - Mt Coot-tha kiosk in 62 mins. Had some transitory stomach pains on the way back. 30th-31st - nothing June 1st - Fartlek+ followed by 8 x 80 yds flat. 2nd - nothing 3rd - 8 miles even pace (including over fartlek+ course in 42:45) followed by 8 x 90 yds flat. 4th - nothing. Mapped out approximate winter build-up programme: Sun: Mt Coot-tha (kiosk) with anyone who wants to come Mon: 12 x 520 yds v walk 130 Tue: Fartlek+ Wed: Mt Coot-tha circuit Thu: (?) (my busy day) Fri: If no race, a run over fartlek+ course. Otherwise (?) Sat: Race or (?) Finish each session with 8 x 80yds sprint training. June 5th (11am) - 3 mile road course in just under 16 min (3:30pm) Mt Coot-tha in quite easy 60:20 Later: 660 in about 1:34 with Moresby and others. 6th - sore right foot (tendon? cf 29/6/64) Started Monday programme but had to stop after 6 x 520. 7th-10th - nothing. 11th - King of the Mountain, Mt Gravatt (4 3/4 miles) Arrived at the course 2 minutes before the start after getting lost. Started off with Clem Parry and Jack Marsh, but Clem soon ran away and Jack was clear by the top of the mountain. On the way down Rex Foulkes (N.S.W.) caught and passed me. He ran away from me on the easy stretch at the bottom, but on the way up the mountain, I passed him on the tough stretches and beat him easily to finish 3rd in 33:41. Chief lesson is to run faster on the easy stretches. 12th-14th - nothing. (Went home for the weekend; then tired and upset stomach.) 15th - Mt Coot-tha circuit. Started slowly and lethargically, wasn't able to spark up until halfway round. Although I slowed down when the downhill jarred my shins, I finished in a good 88:10. Tendon slightly aggravated. 16th-17th - nothing. 18th - started fartlek+; jockstrap broke after 2 x 880, 2 x hill. 19th (morning) - Ran out to Marathon start at Robinson Park and back: 14 miles. 20th - nothing. (Read a "compelling novel" (?)) 21st - 12 x 520 yds v walk 130 yds. Foot seems better. 22nd-23rd - nothing. 24th - started fartlek+ but stopped halfway with a stone bruise under my left foot. However my right foot seems completely recovered. Is this a jinx? 25th - Mayne Handicap (3 miles), Kalinga Park Started off the back marker with the other three University runners, trailing Jack Marsh. Passed him soon after the first creek crossing and kept a small lead until the turning point. Increased my lead coming back over the rough stuff. Once on the smooth again, my reserves came to me suddenly and I covered the last mile very fast, picking off runners at a great rate. Although I finished 17th, I ran 2nd fastest time (16:54) and was within a minute of second place. However not a brilliant time. I must be prepared to start faster. June 26th - Mt Coot-tha kiosk in my first sub-1 hour, viz. 59 mins. Reached top in slow 31 1/4 and came down much faster in 27 3/4. Cf. yesterday. 27th - Fartlek+. (Tony Thelander came most of the way.) 28th - 3 1/4 miles* in 16:13 (then played touch for half an hour). 29th - Mt Coot-tha, easier, with Tony Thelander. 20th - nothing. July 1st - About half an hour steady running. 2nd - Fogarty memorial, 3 miles (Robinson Park). Once again I started from near the back of the field. I was by myself until the creek crossings when I started picking up the field, which I continued doing consistently until a few hundred yards from the finish when I was coming 6th, and too far behiind the leaders to make any further impression on them. On the fairly easy course I should have run a faster time: I finished in 17:18, once again the second fastest but slower than last week, and I finished quite fresh. I will be glad to be able to have a few longer races. 3rd - Mt Coot-tha with Tony. 4th - ran half of fartlek course but couldn't get speed up so finished with 10 x Refec. hill. 5th - nothing 6th - 2 x Tony's road course round St. L. in 34 mins. 7th-8th - nothing. 9th - Mt Coot-tha climb, 6.7 miles The leaders (My and Nixon-Smith) started down at a very fast pace; by the bottom of the first hill Dave Sirl passed me and I passed Nixon-Smith. This hill was a grind but from there to the park was easier. Although I slowed down noticeably, at the park I passed Peter Moy and caught Dave Sirl, but he got away on the undulating ground. By the downhill Peter Moy had dropped back but Jack Marsh passed me at uncontrollable pace. I easily re-passed him and we kept these places as we toiled up the hill to finish: Dave 44:29; me 44:51; Jack 44:59. Quite a pleasing run. (About the same speed as the shorter Mt Gravatt course.) 10th - Very stiff after yesterday. Started doing Mt Coot-tha easy but after a mile my stone bruise was aggravated and I had to stop. 11th - Still stiff. Ran fartlek+ with Tony and foot held up OK. 12th - 8 x 1 lap No 1 oval v walk 1/4 lap; then ran road course with Tony. 13th - Mt Coot-tha with Tony in 73 1/2 from College. 14th-15th - nothing. 16th - Arrived at Jones Park too late to run the 3 mile handicap, but watched the novice team of Don Kerr, Tony Thelander, David Hobson and Dick Copeman win their teams event. Ran about 3 miles easy. 17th (11:30m) Attempted fast run over fartlek+. Stomach pains stopped me after a laborious and disappointing fartlek in 31:10. Abandoned Mt Coot-tha run. 18th - Fartlek+ in a good run with Tony. 19th - Ran out to Jones Park and had a look at the course. Then ran Tony's road course. 20th - Mt Coot-tha easily with TOny in 73:25 from College (incl. 1 1/2 mins at the top). 21st - Rested, but treated foot with ray lamp and analgesic balm. 22nd - nothing 23rd - State cross-country championship, 10km (Jones Park) Clem Parry started at a pace I didn't want to follow - I fell in behind Peter Busby, whom I tried to pass several times before on and after the hill, but he held me off each time. My chance came when we got to the road bridge. I kept my narrow lead on him, but opened up on the flat and was 12 seconds ahead at the turn which I reached in 17:55. I had felt tired on the first circuit, but got second wind. Peter Moy started coming through and passed Peter Busby, and though I fell in the creek once I was abe to keep a 15-second gap on him until after the hill. He closed to aout 10 seconds here but I increased pace and held him off to the finish, coming in 2nd (11 seconds ahead of him and 1 1/2 mins behind Clem) in 36:06. My best this season, but not fast enough. I hope I can get to the National titles which would be a good warm-up for Inter-Varsity. My bruise is a bit sore, and it seems that I will be stuck with it for the rest of the season. 24th - Mt Coot-tha circuit. Felt tired before the start, and was favouring my sore foot all the way, but ran strongly for a good 81:30. (38 1/2, 15, 28.) 25th - Tired. Ran fartlek+ with Tony, but slowly. 26th - Still tired. 4 x 520 yds v walk 130, faster than usual. 27th - Mt Coot-tha with Tony in 72:20 from College. A bit lethargic on the way out but felt good coming back. 28th - 15 x long Refec. hill. 29th - Mt Coot-tha via Russell Ter. 30th - A bit stiff. Ran about 4 miles steady. 31st - Still a bit stiff, and didn't feel like doing Mt Coot-tha. Did 12 x 520 yds v walk 130 yds. Aug. 1st - Fartlek+, a bit slower, with Tony. 2nd - 2 x 520 yds fast v walk 260 yds, and some playing with a football, then the road course with Tony. 3rd - Mt Coot-tha with Tony. (76:05 including 7 mins at the top). Then 3/4 hour touch. 4th - Fartlek+ with Drew Hutton; quite a bit faster and made my legs tired. 5th - nothing. 6th - Nissen Memorial (3 miles), St. Lucia. Started off 5:40 (back marker) along with post entries including Moresby Smith. Peter Moy was 25 seconds ahead. Moresby and I started fast and although I didn't seem to be running well I pulled away from him coming down the Refec. hill. From then on I kept about a constant distance of 50 yds behind Peter Moy to the finish. I didn't really exert myself, but my time of 15:23 was the fastest in the race. An encouraging performance, but I must be prepared to keep nearly this pace for twice the distance. 7th-8th - nothing. 9th - Mt Coot-tha from College in 65:45. Had stiff legs and stomach pains on the way back. 10th - nothing. 11th - half of Fartlek+ course with Ross Girdham. 12th - nothing. Not an impressive week; the little training I have done has been very laboured. 13th - Clem Jones Shield competition v U.N.E., St. Lucia, 10km A bit tired after marking the course in the morning. Started off at a fast pace behind Moresby Smith and Al Blackburn. When we got onto the road after the lake, Al kicked to test us: Moresby responded and I was left but caught them again by the road in front of College. Just after the Refec. hill on the way back we shook off Moresby. Reached 5km in 16:34. The pace slackened consideraby; had a stitch (I learnded later that Al had one too) and I couldn't keep the pressure on. This, I think, lost me the race. I kicked in front of the colleges and again behind them but not long enough to shake him off. Up the Refec. hill for the last time I got a shock to see Jack Marsh 20 yards behind. Al (wearing spikes) tripped on the hill but I couldn't even then get away. From there I made the pace a bit faster until the rail when Al took over with the all-too-fmiliar finish and won by 8 seconds (34:04 to 34:12; Jack 32:21 and Moresby 34:58). I know ow that Al can be beaten by a prolonged kick about halfway but I doubt if I have the condition to do it. 14th-15th - nothing. 16th - Mt Kynoch in a record-breaking 79:20 despite stomach pains on the way back. 17th - 8 x 440 yds v wallk 110 yds. 18th-19th - Nothing (heavy rain and slight stomach upset) 20th Long St hill in fantastic 6:32 (I felt as iff I was going far too slowly to be in the running for a record) and some jogging. 21st - 1 1/2 to 2 miles soft sand running. Same distance water resistance runing (shin to knee deep) and 4-5 miles firm sand running on ocean beach at Bribie Island, and some swimming. 22nd - charted a path to Table Top for the Carnival of Flowers cross-country. 23rd - nothing 24th - slow timed (40:30) run over PP-TT cross country course. 25th - nothing 26th - 3 miles joggng on I/V cross country course at Centennial Park, 27th - Inter-Varsity Cross-Country Championship, 10km I thought Al Blackburn would be the man to watch, and had decided to kick just after half way to try to shake him off. The early pace wasn't as fast as I had expected, but (not feeling in top form before the start) I wasn't going to set the pace myself. I reached the 5km in 16:22, 12 seconds faster than the last race, running 7th. I kicked according to prearranged plan here and although passing in the sand was difficult I had moved up to second by the start of the last grassy loop. As soon as we got on to an easy stretch, I went past the leader, Graham Thompson, who put up very little struggle for it. I expected him to pass me soon afterwards, but as we ran I was feeling better annd better (possibly the thought of victory) and fear that he would pass me caused me to use every bit of my new-found speed. I came home 13 seconds clear of him in a great time of 32:57.2 (splits 16:22, 16:35). We lost the teams event to Melbourne (2, 4, 6, 7, when our team could gain only 1, 9, 13, 20 corrected). 28th-Sep. 4th - nothing (combination of recovery from celebrations, rain and a bad attack of wog). 5th - 3/4 mile and 1/2 mile (timed) v 9 laps jogging with Moresby. 3/4: Started well but ran out of speed: 3:22 (laps 62, 66.5, 73.5) 1/2: Inevitable happened: 2:15 (65, 70). Total distance run 6 3/4 miles. 6th - 20 x 440 yds v jog 220 yds with Peter Busby and John Morris (distributed about evenly between 64 and 72). The first 10 were very easy: I ran out of speed but not condition. 7th - Stiff after yesterday. 3 miles jogging. 8th-10th - nothing. 11th - C.E.G.S. v I.G.S. meet, 2 miles open. Feeling depressed after two bad weeks, I stuck with Parry, Smith and Busby for a while. When the first two went on ahead, I passed Busby and ran on at even pace to finish 3rd in 9:47.9. Laps 67, 73, 72, 75, 75, 75, 76(?), 75(?). A reasonable start to a season, but it made me stiffer than it should have. The wog still hasn't gone. 12th - 6 x 440 yds v walk 110 and some jogging. 13th - a fairly fast 660, two stride-throughs, and some jogging. 14th - C.E.G.S. v T.G.S. meet, 880 yds open The track was firmer than on Sunday. Harrold and Meehan ran the 880 of which the first 220 was in lanes. I started at what I thought a reasonable pace and fell in behind them, after which the pace slowed quite a bit. I followed them around the first lap which was a surprisingly fast 58 though I felt I could have led them. In the second lap, pace ran out on me and they went away. I finished 3rd in 2:03.0 (laps 58, 65) Mile open (aboout 1 hour later) Moresby Smith and a St Peters runner took the pacing with Harrold behind me. The pace was good and felt good. The St P runner didn't last long and Harrold folded early, then Moresby went on away and I just ran on. Laps were 65, 68, 70, 71 although I had tried to make the last one faster, Probably the same effect as the 880. Time 4:34.1, Place 2nd. 15th-16th - nothing. 17th - T.G.S. meet, 880 yds open (1:25pm) Track was dead and wind brisk. I started well back in the field and had to work against the wind in the back straight picking up places. First lap was 59 with Drew Hutton well ahead and many others leading me. I worked into the wind again, then kicked in the long straight passing Moresby Smith and Dave Hobson to finish 4th (behind Hutton, Alley and Busby) in 2:03.0. Laps 59, 64. 2 miles open (2pm) I decided to run easily and at even pace; as a result Moresby Smith and Peter Busby got away. As I expected, Peter began dropping back and I passed him with two to go. I didn't make my last lap faster with the result that Peter Busby nearly caught me. My time would have been about 10:05 but considering conditions an easy race. Place 2nd. 1 mile open (3:45pm) Moresby was after a fast first half-mile and went ahead; I had the rest of the field under control at the start and headed them within hald a lap with Peter dogging me. After 1 3/4 laps Moresby withdrew. My own pace had slowed but I kept on evenly. About 1 1/2 laps to go the runner tailing me changed; I guessed it was Russell Alley. I think my exxperience won me the race: I kicked with a lap to go, again into the wind at 330, and again when Russell challenged at 220. I won in 4:33.9 with laps 65, 71, 72, 66. A very easy run, and after two other races an encouraging performance. After much indecision I now feel I would like to tackle the 880 and mile next week, in the hope of a framatic improvement. 18th - Picnic Point to Table Top and return race. Main opposition appeared to be Peter Busby. I let him pass (did up a shoelace), regaining the lead soon after. Up and down the murderous mountainside the break came, and though I finished much slower, I won easily in about 41 minutes. 19th - nothing. (Stiff after yesterday.) 20th - 2 x 3/4 mile (about 3:20 and 3:24) v jog 3/4 mile. Felt lacking in speed but not in condition. (Finished fairly fresh.) 21st-22nd - nothing. 23rd - 4 miles easy, finishing with 1/3 mile flat out. 24th - meet v C.E.G.S. v B.G.S., No 3 oval 880 yds: Run in lanes for the first bend. Coming out of the bend there was a sea of red singlets in front of me and I lost a log of ground getting to the pole lane. When I got there I moved up to 3rd and went through in 58. In the second lap I was struggling, ad Don Kerr and Dave Hobson went past me. I finished 5th in 2:02.2: a stupid race, and the after-effects made me withdraw from the mile. If I could only throw off this wog, I could get some intelligent training done before Inter-Club. 25th-26th - Nothing. (Wog back worse than ever.) 27th - 4 x Carmody Rd hill and some jogging. Throat bad and felt weak afterwards. 28th - 8 x 520 yds v walk 130 yds. 29th-Oct. 1st - nothing. Oct. 2nd - 65 mins easy road and cros country. 3rd - 9 x 520 yds v walk 130 yds. 4th - 3 miles easy 5th - nothing 6th - (11am, morning after College dance) Started running round No 1 oval, ended up doing 5 miles in about 27 mins. 7th - 3/4 hour of touch. Hurt left big toe. 8th - Nothing (rested toe). 9th - To the ridge (Mt Coot-tha) and back from College in 51 mins. Turned back by smoke from bushfires. 10th - 10 x 520 yds v walk 130 yds. 11th - Nothing. 12th - Mt Coot-tha from College in 68:25 after slow start. 13th - 2 laps No 2 oval fairly fast. Prickles in feet. 14th - Nothing. 15th - Inter-Club trials. 400m: Ran 4th division on damp track with brisk wind. After 150 yards I decided I could win the race, and speeded up to take the lead and win easily in a personal best of 54.8. 1500m (2 hours later): After a bunched start, I took up third position behind Irwin and a Victorian. In the 2nd back straight I tried to pass the Vic. but he resisted. In the third lap the pace slowed and I shot past the Vic. at the end of the back straight. GOing into the last lap he passed me strongly but I took him again in the back straight and finished 2nd, 3 1/2 seconds behind Ron (who didn't get away much in the last lap) in a good 4:10.4. 16th - nothing. 17th - 10 x 90 yds sprints and 20 potato-runs. 18th - Mt Coot-tha from College in 67:25. 19th (12:20am next morning) A steady 3 miles road, finishing fast. 20th - nothing. 21st - 8 x 520 yds v walk 130. (Exhausted by the heat at 11:40m and perhaps the pace.) 22nd - Inter-Club trials. 800m: Although I didn't start fast enough, I made my way up to third behind Wayne Stevens and Peter Moy. The pace wasn't fast enough but I didn't go out ahead; I almost cauught Peter in a faster last 200 than usual. Place: 3rd. Time: 2:01.6. Laps: Approx. 60.5, 61. 5000m: (2 hours later) The weather was much colder; a delay in starting discouraged me and I couldn't bring myself to seriously try. I had quite a duel with Michael Blain before I let him get away. My race was fairly even pace although slowing slightly. First mile 5:01. Place: 4th. Time: 15:48.3. These easy runs are all very well but I should make myself try harder in races. 23rd - Nothing. (College brawl.) 24th - 12 x 520 yds v walk 130. 25th - Fartlek, without 1 x No 3 oval (plovers) and with a break in the middle. 26th - Mt Coot-tha circuit from College in about 94 mins after slow start. 27th - Beach running - Kirra to Currumbin in soft sand and back in water. 28th - Nothing. 29th - Inter-Club, 1st day 400m: In a better class field than last time (2nd division) I was made to run all the way and finished fresh in a very good 53.9 (5th). 1500m: A very good even-pced race, in which I never exerted myself. After half a lap, I took second place behind Ron Irwin. Clem Parry passed me and later Michael Blain also went past but in finishing fast and fresh in an encouraging 4:07.6 (place 3rd). Laps 47, 67, 68.5, 65. A good day, particularly the 400 which seems to point to a good 800 in the future. 30th - Nothing. (Some swimming.) 31st - 12 x 520 yds v walk 130 yds. A good day. Nov. 1st - A lethargic run up Mt Coot-tha from College in a slow 69:50. 2nd-4th - Nothing. (Tired, from study; the usual effect at exam time but milder than usual.) 5th - Inter-club, 2nd day. 800 metres: Not a strong field. I took the lead easily and coasted round the first lap in just over 60. The person from whom I expected some opposition to materialise dropped out (unknown to me). I finished very fast to win by 4 seconds in an easy 2:00.4. 4 x 400m relay, last leg: Given a good lead by Wayne Stevens and Rob and Ric Silcock, but with Evans to beat, I ran steadily for 200, then, thinking I had it won, considered easing up, but fortuately fear of Evans kept me going. I kicked well coming into the straight and speeded up to win by 10 yds. We were timed at 3:18.8 but due to an official mistake ran exactly 9 staggers short. I was timed at 48.6 for 3 staggers and about 2 1/2 yds short, which is still an excellent performance. I must re-reckon my ultimate cababilities over 400, 800 and even 1500. For this season, I must keep an open mind n making the Q'ld team in the 1500m (Better to have three chances at the team than one), and aim for a 1:56 800m. 6th - Mt Coot-tha (from oval) in fairly easy 60:00. 7th-11th - Nothing. (Rain, exams, and general tiredness.) 12th - Inter-Club, 3rd day 400m: Felt funny in my warm-up: good but not fast. I ran quite slowly all the way to finish 5th in the second division in 54.4. A lethargic sort of run but I'm not really concerned. 1500m: Felt even more lacking in speed before the race. Irwin took the lead and left me duelling with Blackett, the Victorian of a month ago. In the second lap I was leading him but he passed me and kept me out for the rest of the race. I would have been capable of beating himm but was just too lay (or tired) to raise the necessary speed. The inevitable effect of exams is showing itself, helped by the unusually bad week last week. I will keep runing, and after exams do another few weeks buildup before starting speedwork. 13th-14th - Nothing. 15th - 4 x 520 yds v walk 260 yds (fast). 16th (11am, before exam) - About 3 miles steady, fair pace. Stopped when I started tiring. 17th-18th - nothing 19th - Inter-Club, 4th day 800m: I had decided to start faster, hoping for a sub-2min. When the race settled down, Moy and Waters were the leaders with me folloowing. So it was until the last 220 when the effect of the fast pace told and everyone slowed. Harrold went past me and I almost caught Waters, but finished 4th, tired, in 1:59.6. 5000m: I could tell that the fast 800 had takenn a lot out of me, but ran anyway. I ran the first mile with Crossthwaite in an easy 4:50, then a stomach cramp hit me and I struggled on slowly and painfully. Towards the end I speeded up a little. I could have run faster at the expense of fighting the pain. Place: 4th; Time: 16:24.4. (Lapped by Irwin in his last lap.) Felt sick for hours afterwards. 20th - Mt Coot-tha kiosk fairly slowly (fairly easy on way back, but hard at start.) 21st - nothing. 22nd - Warmed up and ran 3 x 520 yds. I was plodding, so stopped. 23rd-25th - Nothing. (Finished exams on 24th.) 26th - Inter-District, 1st day 1500m: Still a bit tired, but ran a very easy race. Forced my way up into 3rd place, behind Irwin and an R.A.F. runner. Harrold passed me in the second back straight and tried to slow the pace, but I passed him easily. I was able to lift my pace quite significantly in the third and fourth laps, passing the R.A.F.runner in the last back straight to finish an easy 2nd in 4:09.3 with promise of better races to come. Laps 47, 69, 68, 65. 27th-28th - Nothing. (Road shoes lost.) 29th - Trip to Brisbane. Bought new Adidas "Rome". 8 x 440 v walk 110; ran out of speed in the 7th. 30th - 2 x Prince Henry's Drive. Dec. 1st - Fartlek course in Queen's Park. 2nd - Nothing. 3rd - Inter-District, 2nd day. 800m: A very bad start but I came up without losing too much, but only running about 6th. In the second back straight I passed Hodge, Waters dropped out, and I finished strongly 4th, but only in a disappointing 2:03.1. I must (i) start faster (ii) give up running 8--s (only 1 1/4 hours between 800 and 5000) (iii) train twice a day until January. 4th (M: 10:30am) 2 laps Prince Henry's Drive from home (the two laps in an even 33mins approx.) (A: 5pm) A good 12 x 440 v walk 110. 5th - Nothing. (Rain.) 6th - Mt Kynoch in easy 81:30. 7th-9th - Nothing. (Rain and laziness.) 10th - Inter-Dstrict, 3rd day. 1500m: Peter Moy and Moresby Smith were out for a fast time, planning a 2:02 first 8--. I didn't stick with them, but started too slowly, getting boxed in on the first bend; in the straight I broke out and took up 5th place. Passed Gordon Hodge in the back straight, and then was able to increase pace again, catching a tiring Moresby Smith in the last lap to finish 3rd in fairly good 4:06.0. Sooner or later I must start faster in a race to get used to hanging on. I think I may be coming good now. 11th - 6 1/2 x Mt Lofty track. (The half was before, as warmup.) Recovering quicker than previously. 12th - started 12 x 440 but only finished 8 (pace slightly faster: possibly legs reacting to yesterday, note some stiffness). 13th - Fartlek in Queen's Park. 14th-16th - Nothing. (Tired; workingl went to Brisbane. This is unfortunate but my life now is lacking routine.) 17th - Inter-District competition interrupted by rain. Ran slow and sluggish 3 miles in Toowong Park, not feeling like competition. 18th - Queensland 4 x 1500m championship I ran first leg. Against opposition of Ross Clarke, Stuart Proctor, and someone else I had no trouble in taking the lead and opening up a 40 yard gap but they held me too this in the last lap. A sluggish race. Time unknown but several seconds under 4:10. The others (Tony Cook. Pete Busby and Moresby Smith) kept the lead to give us the title. 19th - 2 x Long St. (7:14 and 7:18). Got a stitch during recovery. Felt weak at the start of the second but finished fast. 20th - Nothing. 21st - Mt Kynoch. Started slow but finished very strongly in about 84 minutes (44, 40). 22nd-25th - Noting. (Very bad cold.) 26th - Cold remains. Ran half an hour on bush tracks at Helidon. 27th (9pm) Hills: 1 x Mary St., 1 x Mt Lofty (dark), and 3 x McKenzie St. 28th - Walked 8 miles and ran 1 mile at Bunya Mts. 29th - Nothing. Discovered a tick under my shoulder. 30th - 2 x Long St. (7:30, 7:34). A bad day: weary in recovery. 31st - 1 1/2 hours walo#king and rock-scrambling at Moogerah Dam. 1967: Jan. 1st-2nd - Nothing. 3rd - 7 x 440 yds v walk 110 or 220 yds. A bad day. Got a stitch. 4th - Intended to run 5 miles but stopped after 3. Llast mile with Ron Irwin. 15:26 (5:12, 5:08, 5:06) 5th-6th - Nothing. 7th - Felt very tired and depressed in the morning but the feeling wore off on reaching Lang Park. Queensland 4 x 800m championship. I had intended to run the 10000m trial but was needed in the 4 x 800m team. I ran first leg and opened up a 35 yard gap during the race which the others (Don Kerr, Moresby Smith and Drew Hutton) increased to win easily. Several times during the race (in the first back straight, second back straight, and coming into the straight) I felt I wasn't running fast enough and speeded up well, but my final time was an excellent 2:00. (The others did 2:03, 2:01 and 1:57.3.) 8th (7am) Mt Glorious (to junction) with Don. A good solid hill. 9th-10th - Nothing. 11th - 6 x 660 v jog 220. A solid day. 12th - 3/4 mile time trial in discouraging slow 3:22.9. Then fast 330. 13th - Nothing. 14th - Bulley Shield, 1500m open. The starting pace was easy, and I soon overhauled Steve Archer to take up second position behind Paul Maugham. In the second back straight Ron Irwin moved up to my shoulder and eased past, soon to be followed by Moresby Smith, Steve Archer and Clem Parry. In the third back straight we went past Paul. In the last back straight I had a duel with Steve which resulted in our passing Clem, but he came again in the straight and beat both of us. Steve went with him but couldn't hold him -- I trailed in 5th, confident that I could have fought both of them if I had wanted to. Not an inspiring race but an encouraging one considering Thursday: it was solid but not hard. My time was 4:06.8. 15th - Trained with Moresby and Steve. Moresby did 2 x 1 1/2 miles in 7 mins v 1 1/2 miles. In the first one, I kept with him for a mile but then he broke contact and Steve beat me by a few seconds. I did 7:13. In the secf I did the first, third, fifth and sixth laps. 16th-17th - Nothing. (Working overtime.) 18th - Twlight meet: 3000m open. Moresby led out and I followed but couldn't keep his pace. Soon afterwards, Clem passed me and foolishly I let him get away. In the middle stages, although not runing exceptonally fast, I felt very strong. I finished 3rd in 8:54.2 (Moresby 8:24, Clem 8:;44.) I think I can get my best for the State titles now by having all available races between now and then, and doing faster training. 19th-20th - Nothing. (Working overtime.) 21st - Q'ld v N.S.W. 1500m. Found out at 12:10pm that I was in the team, along with Peter Moy. I found the early pace reasonably easy and with the small field took the lead going into the turn and held it until Moy and Lotty eased past coming out of the next turn. I stahed with them for a while but they went away. The second N.S.W. runner challenged me and I held him for a while but he beat me easily in the last lap. However my time in coming 4th was a good 4:03.3. Laps 44, 633, 67, 69. 22nd - Invitation 800m (1st division) There was, unfortunately, no invitation 5000m. We ran the first bend in lanes annd I came out 3rd, behind Don Kerr and Smith (Vic.) They slowed the pace down a bit in the back straight ut Don went to the lead in the bend. I went through in 58.5. Smith took off and left us. I increased pressure in the back straight, with Wilson (N.S.W. manager) on my tail. He eased past in the straight, but Russell Alley tore past from nowhere, almost taking Don Kerr. I was 5th in a respectable 2:00.0. 23rd-24th - Nothing. 25th - Queensland Championships, 10000m Felt slow in warmup. I stahed with the leaders Irwin, Parry and Archer for a couple of laps until they got away and I was alone. I was going quite respectaly for 10 laps until the pace became too fast and I slowed. Soon afterwards, I got a stitch. I battled onn for 12 more laps until finally Danny Murphy cauught me. This was unexpected and demoralising but fortunately the stitch left me. I put on the pressure for a lap and held him off. Had I fought harder I might have beaten him but I gave up and in the last 1 3/4 laps he gained 8 seconds on me. I was 5th in 33:16.0. 26th-29th - Nothing. (Cyclone.) 30th - Beach running: along Burleigh beach in soft wet sand and back in shin-to-waist-deep turbulent water. Stiff afterwards. 31st - Attempted 3 1/4 miles*. Did 2.960 miles* [?] in a sluggish 11:57 (10:05 for 2 miles) Feb. 1st - 3/4 mile wiith Don in 3;17.4 (6, 66, 69). He beat me easily in the last 220. 2nd-3rd - Nothing. 4th - Queensland Championships, 1500m. I had to cocntend with Moresby Smith, Peter Moy, Stephen Archer and Paul Maugham. It was a packed start and I had to run almost a lane wide round the first bend. In the straight Steve led but I went wide and went with him. He wouldn't let me past so onn the bend I speeded him up and dropped in behind him. Soon afterwards Peter and Moresby went past. Stee went with them and somehow got away. In the last 1 1/2 laps Paul Maugham tried to pass me but by increasing my pace in the straights I got rid of im and came in 4th in 4:03.2 (laps 45, 65, 66, 67, last two estimated). 5th - Queensland Championships, 5000m Moresby Smith, Stephen Archer and Clem Parry were main opponents. I started off behind Moresby and Steve with Clem dropping back; I told myself the pace was too fast for me (something I mustn't do in an important race) and let them get away. SOon Clem went past like a rocket to catch Steve. From then on there was nobody near me and I ran on, graduall slowing, until the last straight which I ran very fast. The main problem seems to be in running ob at fast pace despite the pain -- the challenge in hurting myself is gone. Place: 4th. TIme: 15:35.1. Laps (188yds, then 440 yds): 28, 67, 73, 75, 75, 76, 76, 79, 79, 78, 78, 73. Miles: 4:50, 5:10, 5:07. (First 440: 66. Last 188: 28. 3 miles: 15:07.) 6th-7th - Nothing. 8th - Twilight meet, 880 yds open. This was to be a fast run by Drew Hutton, paced by Ric Clarke for 550. Then came Don Kerr, then myself. I went through the first lap fairly fast. In the second, I thought I had maintained the pace until Gordon Holden tackled me coming into the straight. I speeded up a lot and just beat him (by less than a foot) in an epic battle down the straight. However, the time was only 2:01.2. 9th-10th - Nothing. 11th - Bulley Shield, 1500m I felt a bit stiff but a long warmup cured this. Ron Irwin took the lead and was obviously after a fast time: his first lap was 61, mine 63. All through the race I ran solo (1/4 mile laps 3, 0:09, 3:17) and finished 2nd, well clear of Clem Parry, in 4:04.7. A good time for a solo run. This season has, if nothing else, matured my racing techniques and attitudes, particularly the amount of fight I am capable of. 12th (10am; very hot and humid) - 8 x 520 v walk 130. Intended to do 12 but affected by humidity. 13th - Nothing. 14th-16th - Light jogging only. (I warmed up for 3 miles at twilight but it rained.) 17th - Nothing. I feel a bit sick and weak but this doesn't excuse a bad week. 18th - Bulley Shield, 5000m Started running 3rd behind Ron Irwin and a T.E. runner who dropped out after a mile. On my heels was a Mt. G. runner. In the 4th back straight Clem Parry went past and I let him go as my own pace wasn't slowing much. I made few half-hearted attempts to shake off the Mt. G. runner but he dropped off in my slowest lap. I came ome well in the last mile and was a fairly close 3rd behind Clem in 15:37.2. (Laps 72, 74, 74.5, 76, 76, 76, 76, 77.5, 77, 76, 76, 30.) I finished striding and could have taken off a second or two by sprinting. Miles: 4:56.5, 5:05.5, 5:05. 19th-25th - Nothing. 26th - 7 miles sand and water running Kirra - Currumbin return. 27th-Mar. 2nd - Nothing. (Very wet week.) Mar. 3rd - Mt Coot-tha from College at 9pm in under 69, running through a heavy shower. Stiff and blistered and lost a toenail. 4th - Started warmup for 1500m but due to official bungles I couldn't run it. 5th - Bulley Shield 5000m I still can't visualise how this race was so slow. Clem Parry had it well in comand; Danny Murphy went ahead of me but pulled out after a mile. Stu Proctor caught me with five laps to go, and passed me with 3 to go; I cannot see that he beat me by the 50 seconds they gave him! They timed(?) me at 16:31.2 for third. 6th-7th - Nothing. (Wet; feeling a bit sick and weak.) 8th - Fartlek, fairly well considering sick feeling. 9th (12:15am next moring) - Mt Coot-tha kiosk in about 72 minutes. 10th - Nothing else. 11th - Nothing. (Flu.) 12th (10:30am) 7 1/2 miles steady to solid with Moresby (2 x his flat course of 3.65 miles). (5pm) 2 2/3 mile + 1/2 mile v jog 2/3 mile with Moresby, Tony Cook and Roy Scott. 13th - Nothing. 14th - Fartlek+ with 2 extra hills, with half-a-dozen others. 15th - 6 x 600 yds v walk 150. Interrupted by rain; felt easy. 16th-20th - Nothing. (Very bad cold.) 21st - 2 miles easy and 600 yds in 1:28.0 with Don. Competely lacking speed. Still have cold. 22nd - Nothing. 23rd - Mt Coot-tha ridge in 48:30. Effect of cold remains - I couldn't move fat. 24th - Nothing. 25th - Mulgowie sports. 440 yds: Came last out of a field of 5, and though I ws pushing it I obvioiusly couldnn't get speed. 880 yds: Rob Silcock and Peter Hooper ran and both led me in the first 220, when I broke out from being boxed in and passed Rob. I passed Peter after the first lap, and worked going up the hll, making enough gap to win. The race was quite easy and I had fight left at the end but still no speed. (Cold remains.) 26th - Nothing. 27th - 6 x 520 v walk 130. (Faster; stopped by darkness.) Quite a good session considering my condition. 28th - Nothing. 29th - 2 x 2/3 mile, first easy, secod faster, v jog 2/3 mile/ 30th-31st - Nothing. Apr. 1st: U.Q.A.CC. v T.E.E.S. Conditions very windy. 1500m: Don Kerr and Drew Hutton took the lead; the pace was slower than it seemed. I took over in the second lap and tried to push the pace in the third lap without in fact succeeding at all. When Drew and Don passed me I didn't fight but as I had third place secured I finished easily. Time: 4:21.5. Laps: 48, 68, 70.5, 75. 800m: I took the lead from the "cut in" and held it until Dave Hobson passed me with 150 to go. I could have challenged him but again didn't other. Finished 2nd in 2:04.3 (Laps 60,64). 4 x 400m relay (University B team, last leg) I took the baton just behind a T.E. runner and followed him all the way, not quite able to pass him. I died in the final straight. A lot more condition seems required. But I have at present a lot of Athletics Club work and a big emotional problem and I'm finding it very hard to be enthusiastic. 2nd - Nothing. 3rd - 8 x 600 yds v walk 150. A solid day. 4th - Nothing. 5th - A fast 2/3 mile 6th - Warm-up only. 7th - Nothing. 8th - Freshers' Titles, 1st day 1500m: A similar sort of race to last week. THis time it was Drew and Moresby. I again tried to push the pace along in the third lap but they both passed me in the 4th when I didn't put up much fight. However my time was a much more respectable 4:08.4. Laps 47.5, 68, 66, 66. 9th-10th - Nothing. 11th - Mt Coot-tha (from College; back to the oval) in a fery easy and encouraging 64:45. I finished the hill fast and had a stitch on the way back. 12th - Started 3 1/4 miles* under bad conditions (windy, soft surface). Felt tired and topped after 4 laps iin 5:40, 20 seconds inside schedule. Afterwards 2 x 88- (2:07.5, laps 61, 66.5, and 2:16.4, laps 69, 67.5) v jog 2 laps with Moresby. 13th-14th - Nothing. 15th - Freshers' titles, 2nd day 5000m: Moresby, after a fast 3000m time, went to the front. I fell easily into a very comfortable pace at which I was able to lap all the other runners; when Moresby finished his 300m I caught and lapped him too. A nice easy win in 15:35.0 (laps 34, 71, 73, 76, 76, 77, 77, 77, 77, 78, 76, 76, 67). 1000m estimated: 2:58, 3:10.5, 3:12.5, 3:13, 3:01. This run couuld be the one to restore my enthusiasm - it is equivalent to 10 sec or more better than my performance in the Freshers' titles last year. 16th-17th - Nothing. 18th - 400m (56.0) v 3 min v 1600 m (4:48.0). 19th - 2 x 800m v jog 800m (2:06 and 2:14); later 6 100m, 400m 958.5) and 300m. 20th-21st - Nothing. 22nd - Club titles, first day 1500m: Once again it was Drew and Moresby. however, this time, I didn't get a chance to set the pace - these two ran very impressively. I followed along at my own pace and finished 3rd in 4:07.6, a good margin clear of Don Kerr. Not very impressive, but good enough. Laps 47, 65, 68, 67.5. 23rd - Club titles 10000m: Not much opposition: Tony COok, TOny Thelander and Hugh Kirkman. My race was completely solo: I lapped all competitors, Tony Thelander twice (13th and 24th), Hugh (19th) and TOny Cook (22nd). The early pace was good but I slowed after about half-way, except for laps when I passed people, which tended to be faster. Time: a reasonable 32:55.6. Laps: 72.8, 74.1, 76.4, 77.4, 77.8, 77.5, 77.3, 78.5, 79.1, 78.2, 78.7, 79.0, 77.7, 79.6, 80.8, 82.0, 82.6, 84.5, 81.7, 84.4, 80.6, 77.6. 1000m times estimated: 3:05.1, 3:13.4, 3:14.0, 3:16.6, 3:16.5, 3:17.5, 3:18.7, 3:25.0, 3:28.4, 3:20.4. I need a 10000m trial on our trials day before I/V. With two more runs over the distance I should get down to a more respectable time. 24th - Light jogging only. 25th - I.C.C. 800m: I thought my only possibility of beating Wayne Stevens would be a fast first lap and kick in the third 200. However, I couldn't get moving well at all (despite a good stride-through), and the first lap was only 59. ABout 30m from the end of the first lap Wayne jumped me and left me for dead. I poured on effort in the third 200 but to no avail; in the last 15m, Ian Wilson edged past to beat me by 0.1sec. My time was 1:59.6 (laps 59, 60.5). 1500m: Once again I couldn't get moving, and Butler held on for 2 laps; however, although I didn't speed up, he dropped off leaving me an easy 100m win in 4:09.7 (laps 48, 67, 68, 67). 26th - 2 x 800m (2:07 and 2:12) v jog 800m with Moresby. 27th-29th - Nothing. (A busy time with Commem etc. - lost a lot of sleep.) 30th - Meet v U.N.E., Armidale 1500m: Despite expected tiredness, I felt very good before warmup but was struggling for breath in the warm but crisp air. The first lap was fast, led by Brian Wright until I took over, but from then on I was on my own and struggling hard against a severe oxygen debt. I won easily enougn in a very slow 4:15.2 (last two laps 70, 70). 5000m (nearly 6 hours later): The oxygen deficiency seemed less severe but my inclination for running was considerably less. After a lap I took the lead, threw off my pursuers after a few laps, and had a very easy half-lap win in a slow 15:45.3, finding the running quite easy. May 1st - Nothing. 2nd - 7 laps with 5 hurdles at 2'6" per lap, and 4 laps with 5 hurdles at 3'0" per lap. 3rd - Nothing. 4th - 12 x 400 very easy v jog 200, first 6 with Hugh Kirkman. (The first was 64.) 5th - Nothing. 6th - Club championships 500m: Moresby Smith and Ron Irwin were running, and on a very wet track in light drizzle I soon lost contact. I ran a very lazy (and frightening) solo race in a slow 15:33.9 to come 3rd. Laps 33, 69, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 77, 78, 78, 77, 73; 1000m estimates 2:54, 3:04.5, 3:11.5, 3:15,, 3:09. 7th - Nothing. 8th (11:30am) - Mt Coot-tha in a splendid 65:05 from College - it could easily have been faster. 9th - Light jogging only. 10th - Nothing. 11th - Fartlek+ with Hugh Kirkman. 12th - Nothing. 13th - G.P.S. relay, Kalinga. Running last leg for heavily-handicapped Uni team, the first creek spoilt my hope for a fast start, but I ran a solid uninspired 10:48 for 2nd fastest time. (The team was 6th.) 500m, UQAC trial I started slowly, pacing Tony Cook. After 300m I got restless and left him. Time an understandably slow 15:54.2; laps 33, 71, 78, 78, 81, 79, 80, 83, 69, 76, 78, 76, 72. Finish ws reasonably encouraging. 14th (M) - 1 mile on Mt Nebo. (A) - light jogging. 15th - Nothing. (Very busy with I/V arrangements). 16th - 2 miles in 9:52 solo. 17th - Light jogging only. 18th - Intended to run 10000m trial. After 12 laps I was running well and a lot faster than intended, but had a slight stitch, so I stopped after 6000m in 18:48.3. Laps 71, 73, 72, 74, 74, 75, 75, 77, 76, 76, 79, 78, 77, 78, 73. 1000m times: 3:00, 3:04, 3:08.5, 3:10.5, 3:15.5, 3:10. 19th - Sprints (12 100 yds and 1 x 300m). 20th - Nothing. 21st (in Sydney) - 2 1/2 miles easy running. 22nd - Nothing. 23rd - Inter-Varsity 10000m: Weather very cold. It had been raining. The early pace felt very easy and I led, but I lacked confidence to push it too fat. I alternated the lead with Morrissey for a whilee then kept it, with McClelland on my heels. I put in a couple of faster laps to try to shake him off, but he stuck on easily and went past after about a dozen laps. He went to a good lead but I was holding on and even gaining. Then I slowed and lost a bit and suddenly (about 10 laps from home) Bateman shot past. 8 laps out I got a stitch, but I didn't slow too much and even managed to gain a bit. I finished 3rd in the tremendous time of 31:20.8 [a club record], only 10 seconds behind the winner and 2 seconds in front of the new Australian junior record by Sigmont. Laps (374m track, 26 3/4 laps approx.): 46, 66, 69, 67, 69, 71, 70, 71, 71, 69, 74, 73, 72, 70, 70, 71, 71, 71, 71, 72, 74, 71, 71, 75, 70, 70, 65. Rough estimate of 1000m splits: 2:59, 3:06.5, 3:08.5, 3:12,5, 3:08.5, 3:08.5, 3:10,3:13, 3:13, 3:01. [Add about 4.5 seconds per lap.] 24th - Nothing. 25th - Inter-Varsity 5000m: Weather fine and warmer. Once again I had to take the lead at the start. I kept it (apart from one attempt by Sigmont to take it) until Toogood went past and went away. Later McClelland also passed me but didn't get away. Alan Robinson came up and sat on me for most of the race. I made one or two half-hearted and futile attempts to shake him off. About two laps out he shot past and went on to pass McClelland. I held on to 4th place comfortably, and as a result of not pushing the last lap, missed a personal best by 0.9 seconds. Time 15:04.5. Laps (13 3/8 approx.): 24, 63, 65, 66, 66, 68, 68.5, 70, 70, 68.5, 70, 69, 67.5. 1000m estimates: 2:54, 2:59, 3:05.5, 3:05, 3:01. Certainly my best-judged 5000m for some time. 26th - Nothing. (Flew back to Brisbane.) 27th - Cross-country, Jones Park (10000m), Trial for Q'ld team. I felt reasonably good before the race. At the start I took by force the role of pacemaker but couldn't get away from the field. After only about 4000m, I got a stitch, and Murphy and Proctor, who had gone to the lead, were able to start getting away. Going up the hill the second time Buttress-Grove shot past very fast; I was slowed almost to a walk. At the top of the hill Buttress-Grove went astray and I followed without thinking, letting Murphy and Proctor go further ahead. At this stage I was very doubtful of making the first four, as Jack Marsh was running very well behind me. However, I started to recover a bit. I passed Buttress-Grove but didn't go after M&P who had a big lead, finishing 3rd in 36:39. (5000m 17:54 and 18:45.) I made the team, but hurt my foot in the race (left ankle). June 1st - A couple of 400s, not fast but quite tiring. 2nd - Nothing, 3rd - 5000m trial, Kalinga Park. A changed course made the start much flatter and I had a chance to get into a stride before the rough stuff. I was well back in the field at the start but soon was 3rd behind Jack Marsh and Danny Murphy. I passed Murphy who dropped back; by the turning point I had caught Jack but delayed passing him in view of the stream of oncoming runners. He stuck to me until a kilometre out when I ran away and relaxed aat the end to win by 5 sec. in a good 15:29. 4th-10th - Nothing. (A week of very heavy rain.) 11th - 15 mile road handicap, Robinson Park The race was run in pouring rain, and was of course by far the most ambitious race I have tackled. I started with Clem Parry and Rex Foulkes (who drew away) but I continued running quite well, passing the 8 miles in 43:28. At about 10 1/2 miles I got a stitch which proved the beginning of the end. I struggled on, being passed by Murphy and Buttress-Grove, to finish 5th in 83:28 (second on handicap). I was stiff and felt sick afterwards. 12th - 3 miles road. Stiffness improving. 13th-15th - Nothing. (Rain; recovering.) 16th - 3 miles easy jogging. 17th - Australian cross-country championships, Launceston I had contracted a very bad cold on the way down, and the weather was cold and foggy. I never really got started and after running last for a lot of the way on the hard, hilly and pot-holed course, I finished 32nd out of 35 starters. As I expected, my breathing gave the most trouble. 18th-23rd - Nothing. (Cold very heavy.) 24th - Queensland 10 mile road championship The night after our formal - I still had the cold and did not expect to run well. I started 5th behind Clem Parry, Lew Buttress-Grove, Jack Marsh and Ian Murray. Stuart Proctor and Danny Murphy passed me soon after the first mile (5 mins.) Then I started to slow. The next two miles were about 5:30, with Dave Preston passing me near the 2 mile mark. At about 4 miles I felt very tired, had slowed to 6 mins. per mile and was considering withdrawing; but I started to feel better and kept my place, increasing pace slightly, to finish 8th in 57:26. 25th-30th - Nothing. July 1st - Mt Nebo ascent, 6.2 miles I found the early pace quite easy and was up withh the leaders. There were quite a few ahead of me but I passed Danny Murphy on the hill and almost caught John Morris. On the easy part I ran well but found myself without speed and Danny passed me. I came in 6th in 40:56 after a very enjoyable run. 2nd-7th - Nothing. 8th - 3 mile sealed handicap, Dittmer Park. After the field settled down, I found myself with Moresby Smith and Paul Maugham; though I tried i was unable to pass them, but they kept me moving at a reasonable pace most of the way. Towards the ennd I applied pressure 600 yards out and surprisingly left them floundering. I came in 4th (2nd in the open division) in 16:09. 9th-14th - Nothing. The negligible amount of training I have been doing lately is not entirely due to my cold or the raun although these have contributed. I am now coming to question the purpose of running - I am not sufficiently convinced of its intrinsic value to sustain me in training. 15th - Ran most of the way out to Kalinga Park but then was too busy to run (taking entries etc.) 16th-18th - Nothing. 19th - Mt Coot-tha circuit. I intended to do the loop twice but got a stitch just before starting the second lap. The time was about 91 minutes from College including a slowing-down for the stitch and taking it easy on the first lap in anticipation of a second, and so could have been much faster. A reasonable run. 20th-22nd - Nothing. 23rd - Marathon Championship, Robinson Park (7:30am) I hadn't had time for breakfast beforehand and had had two pieces of barley sugar. This possibly was fatal: I was running very easily at the start, reaching the 5 and 10 in 29:53 and 59:59 with Dave Preston and still under 6 minutes per mile at 13. Then Dave went ahead (to finish second) and I slowed a little to 91:15 at 15. After this I folded up, walking at 17 1/2 and pulling out at 19, very painful. However, I recovered much quicker than after the 15. 24th-28th - Nothing except one light run. Plenty of walking though. 29th - Fogarty Memorial, 3 miles, Robinson Park. I started with Ian Murray and Lew Buttress-Grove. I stayed with them for a while until Lew and then Ian got away. Jack Marsh also passed me. Although I wasn't running well, I passed Jack again and finished fairly strongly. 30th - Nothing. 31st - Dave Wilmoth stirred me by asking what training he should do. Did 1/2 hour fartlek with him. Aug. 1st (9pm) An easy Mt Coot-tha with Dave in 78 mins from College (3 mins at the top). 2nd-4th - Nothing. 5th - Queensland cross-country championship, 10km, St Lucia. A fairly easy and fairly encouraging run. Soon after the start Clem Parry went away leaving me in a fairly big group. There was quite a lot of swapping and the group eventually settled down to Jack Marsh, Ian Murray, Harvey Cheetham and myself. At about 7km I was running strongly and seemed to be well in the hunt for 2nd place, but I had no drive in me and let the other three beat me to finish 5th in a fairly close finish (34:45). 6th-18th - Nothing. 19th - Inter-Varsity Cross Country, Monash University The course was over very rough uneven ground most of the way, and made slippery by the rain; the weather was bitterly cold. I started in the usual fashion for an I/V race, but on the rough slippery ground I never got going and didn't pass anyone, although few passed me after we settled down. I was running a little easier towards the end, but finished a very bad 23rd in 38:08. 20th - Nothing. 21st - 4 x 5009m road relay. I just ran, finding the distance a long way and recording a slow 16:34 for the distance. Possibly the events of the previous day are some excuse. This season I have almost completely lacked motivation; in my academically important third term I would be ill advised to do much serious running but will try to get fit and try for a good season next year. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary ------- Championships: State: 3rd, 2 miles U19, 7/3/64 1st, novice cross-country, 1/8/64 3rd, 1 mile U19, 6/3/65 2nd, 2 miles U19, 7/3/65 2nd, 1500m, 5/3/66 2nd, cross-country, 23/7/1966 1st, 4 x 1500m, 18/12/66 1st, 4 x 800m, 7/1/67 University: 2nd, freshers 1 mile, 11/4/64 1st, freshers 3 miles, 18/4/64 3rd, 880yds, 9/5/64 2nd, 1 mile, 30/4/66 1st, 3 miles, 7/5/66 3rd, 1500m, 22/4/67 1st, 10000m, 23/4/67 3rd, 1500m, 6/5/67 Inter-varsity: 3rd, 5000m, 26/5/66 1st, cross-country, 27/8/66 3rd, 10000m, 23/5/67 Best times: 440yds: 55.0, 14/11/65 400m: 53.9, 29/10/66 880yds: 1:58.5, 17/10/65 800m: 1:58.0, 6/9/64 1 mile: 4:22.8, 7/10/65 1500m: 4:02.6, 24/5/66 2 miles: 9:25.4, 2/5/66 3000m: 8:54.2, 18/1/67 3 miles: 14:36.6, 7/5/66 5000m: 15:03.6, 26/5/66 10000m: 31:20.8, 23/5/67
