Royal Institution Masterclass
This was a reprise of something I did in 2012 for some Swedish high-school students, but this time for a large group of highly motivated lower sixth form students coming in on a Saturday morning. I explained the illogical nature of the continuum hypothesis as motivation for quantum spacetime and then provided a taster of noncommutative differential calculus in one variable covering both the chord-type one of Newton’s supervisor Isaac Barrow and the q-deformed one, before explaining a bit about quantum groups. Click on the above to see the overheads (which does not include the calculations, which I did no the blackboard). The image shows coSchroedingers cat - a cat falling into a black hole ends up both dead and alive depending on the reference frame.
