MAS232 Statistical Modelling I

School of Mathematical Sciences

Key Objectives

The following topics will appear as parts of some of the questions in the Statistical Modelling I examination. If answered completely correctly, the marks obtained will be approximately equivalent to a bare pass in the examination.

Estimation and inference:

  • the least squares estimates of the parameters in the simple and multiple regression models,
  • prediction of a new observation of the response variable,
  • confidence and prediction intervals, testing individual parameters, test for significance of the regression.

Model checking:

  • using residual plots for detection of model violations, outliers.

Understanding Minitab output:

  • interpreting fitted linear models in Minitab.

You should expect the complete set of questions in the examination to range over the entire set of lecture notes and Minitab practicals.

The following rubric will be used in the examination paper:

You should attempt all questions. Marks awarded are shown next to the questions. Calculators may be used in this examination, but no programming, graph plotting or algebraic facility may be used. Please state on your answer book the name and type of machine used.

The New Cambridge Statistical Tables are provided.
