The School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London invites applications for the position of Professor of Statistics. The plan is to expand the Statistics group by appointing a professor who can build up a research group in some area of statistical methodology. Potential topics include survey sampling, hierarchical generalized linear mixed models, functional data analysis, computational statistics, variable selection in high-dimensional data, Bayesian statistics, statistical inference, robust regression, missing data, statistics for sensor networks, statistical image analysis, biostatistics, environmental statistics, medical statistics, and spatio-temporal processes. Further appointments to the new group are planned for 2013.

The current Statistics group specializes in the Design of Experiments. It has strong interactions with the other sections of the School of Mathematical Sciences, and also with the Schools of Biological and Chemical Sciences, Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Engineering and Materials, and Medicine and Dentistry. The new research group should be in an area that is distinct from Design of Experiments but close enough for the two groups to share interests.

The successful applicant will be an outstanding statistician who is motivated by applications while being strong enough mathematically to fit into the School of Mathematical Sciences; have an excellent international profile in statistical research; have a good record of obtaining competitive research funding; be able to lead research and develop a strong group within the School of Mathematical Sciences; be able to build on the existing research links with other departments at Queen Mary; and be able to contribute to the new MSc in Applied Statistics.

The post is full time and permanent. Salary will be by negotiation within the Professorial range. Benefits include 30 days' annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
