Postdoctoral Research Assistant x2
The School of Mathematical Sciences has funding from the European Research Council for two Postdoctoral Research Assistants to work with Dr Peter Keevash in the area of Extremal Combinatorics.
The Pure Mathematics group at Queen Mary has for some time been a leader in combinatorics and has long been recognised as having one of the UK's strongest algebra groups. It also has small but active groups in logic, geometry, analysis, and probability. The combinatorics group is very active and has experts in extremal combinatorics, graph colourings, Ramsey theory, Markov chains, computational complexity and percolation. Research in the group also has links with algebra, logic, information and coding theory, design of experiments, statistical mechanics and the theory of algorithms. A weekly Combinatorics Study Group is held during term time, with healthy participation of staff and postgraduate students from Queen Mary and other London institutions.
Candidates should have a strong research background in Combinatorics and experience with Extremal Combinatorics. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with knowledge of the Szemeredi Regularity Lemma, probabilistic methods, algebraic methods, discrete Fourier analysis, and other techniques used in the field. It is intended that one post will have a focus on Hypergraph Embedding, and the other on Extremal Set Theory and Isoperimetry.
Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics or a related field at the time of commencing employment, but it is permissible for the viva to be pending if they have written their PhD thesis and have a strong statement from their PhD adviser.
Both positions are full time and available for a fixed term period of 2 years. Candidates must be able to start no later than 30th September 2012. The starting salary will be in the range of £30,500 - £35,824 per annum, subject to experience and qualifications.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
Informal enquiries for further information are encouraged. These may be addressed to Dr. Peter Keevash (on Tel: +44 (0)20 7882 3160 or email: p.keevash@qmul.ac.uk).
Please visit www.maths.qmul.ac.uk for further information about the School.
Please see below to download an application form and for further details about the vacancy. Alternatively please visit the Human Resources website on www.hr.qmul.ac.uk/vacancies.
Completed application forms and a CV, including publications list and a research statement, should be returned, preferably by post, quoting the reference number 12014/NL to Recruiting Officer, School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS. Alternatively, applications can be sent electronically, to jobs@maths.qmul.ac.uk by the closing date of Friday 24 February 2012. Please indicate on the application form which area you wish to focus on (Hypergraph Embedding or Extremal Set Theory and Isoperimetry) and / or if you would like to be considered for both focus areas.
Interviews are anticipated to be held during early March 2012.
Please note that due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to advise candidates who have been unsuccessful in their application.
