Postdoctoral Research Assistant for EPSRC-funded Project “Algebra and geometry of matroids”
We have one opening for an 18-month postdoctoral research assistant position to work on tropical geometry. This position is funded by EPSRC through the project “Algebra and geometry of matroids” to carry out research on moduli of tropical varieties and tropical scheme theory.
Project details: An ongoing theme in tropical geometry has been to provide foundations for the area which imitate those algebraic geometry over a field. One driver for this is the observation that tropical subvarieties of real vector spaces, as standardly defined, behave like algebraic cycles rather than subvarieties per se. The new theory of tropical schemes is expected to provide objects with all the richness of subvarieties, with possible ultimate impacts such as allowing development of tropical homological techniques, deformation theory, etc. All the same, much remains to be understood in the classification of even the standard tropical varieties: parameter spaces for these have not yet been constructed outside of special cases, the richest being linear spaces. The aim of this project is therefore to build parameter spaces for tropical varieties and schemes, and use this to compare their structure.
Suitable candidates: The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD in mathematics or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate should also have a strong background in algebraic combinatorics or algebraic geometry, and ideally some familiarity with tropical geometry.
