Vortices in accretion discs: formation and dynamical evolution

The presence of giant vortices in accretion discs is an appealing process to explain
planet formation but also angular momentum transport.  However, the mechanism
by which such structures are created and sustained in discs is still strongly debated.
In this seminar, I will present the role played by vortices in astrophysical discs and I will discuss
several formation processes. In particular, I will demonstrate the existence of
baroclinic instabilities, driven by the disc thermal structure.
I will also introduce some results regarding the stability of disc vortices using
phenomenological arguments and numerical methods. Finally, I will discuss
the global dynamics of these structure and their migration in simplified disc models.
