Classical transcendental functions such as the exponentiation, elliptic and modular functions exhibit certain properties which have also been defined and studied in model theory in an unrelated context. This remarkable coincidence sheds new light on central conjectures of transcendental number theory and Diophantine geometry, including Schanuel's conjecture and the Grothendieck period conjecture.
