I shall explain a new method for deriving a presentation for a group from its action on a set (finite or infinite, with or without extra structure). Several applications will be mentioned/discussed, including new presentations for the Mathieu groups. Towards the end, I shall sketch some of the more elementary (discrete) aspects of deformation theory, and will demonstrate by means of an example how the technique of group deformation can interact with (and thereby further enhance) the presentation method. (Joint work with S.A. Basarab, Bukarest).
