All our degree programmes require GCE A-level Mathematics, or equivalent.
Our normal requirement for entry in 2012 is
- for Mathematics, Statistics and Financial Economics (GL11): AAB at A-level including grade A in Mathematics;
- for other BSc programmes: 340 points from A-level Mathematics and either two other A-levels (i.e. AAB, A*BB, A*AC, A*A*D) or one other A-level and two AS-levels, including either grade A in A2 Mathematics or grade B in both A2 Mathematics and Further Mathematics;
- for MSci programmes (G102 and G1G3): 360 points from A-level Mathematics and either two other A-levels or one other A-level and two AS-levels, including grade A in A2 Mathematics;
- at least grade C in GCSE English Language, or equivalent.
Our normal requirement for entry in 2013 will probably be as for 2012.
The UCAS tariff for A-levels is A*=140, A=120, B=100, C=80, D=60, E=40; for AS-levels the tariff is halved.
Additional information
- We encourage you to take A-level Further Mathematics if it is available to you, and we collaborate with the Further Mathematics Support Programme.
- We do not specifically exclude any subjects and we welcome unusual but relevant subjects (such as philosophy). We normally base our offer on your most relevant subjects and not necessarily on your best subjects. If one of your A2 subjects is less relevant, such as general studies or a foreign language, then we may require Mathematics and another subject, all at A2 level.
- Vocational or applied A-levels and BTEC National qualifications may be included in the points total if accompanied by A-level Mathematics.
- For Mathematics with Psychology (G1C8) some previous experience of Psychology may be advantageous.
Science and Engineering Foundation Programme (SEFP)
If you have studied Mathematics beyond GCSE level but not to GCE A2 level and you have a non-standard academic background then you can apply for any course except GL11 with a foundation year via the UCAS codes GGX1/GGY1. Our normal requirement for entry in 2012 is a total of 280 UCAS points.
We are also happy to accept applicants via our International Science and Engineering Foundation Programme (ISEFP), for which you apply directly to the ISEFP team.
Admissions policy
- We have a flexible admissions policy and we encourage applications from students with other comparable qualifications, including students from abroad, mature students and students attending appropriate Access or Higher Education Foundation courses; see also the general Queen Mary entry requirements, especially for qualifications other than GCE A-levels.
- We normally make our standard conditional offer if your predicted grades and/or AS-level results put you within 40 UCAS points of our entry requirements.
- We may make an unconditional offer or confirm your place in August if your results are within 20 UCAS points of our entry requirements, but this depends on several factors. We are more likely to accept you if you have a good grade in Further Mathematics, an A* in A-level Mathematics or additional UCAS points from qualifications not included in our offer.
- If necessary, we may offer you a programme with lower entry requirements, either when you apply or in August; for example, G100 instead of G102 or GG31 instead of GL11. But note that we invite all students on appropriate BSc programmes who achieve first-class results in their first year to transfer to our MSci programme, namely from G100/G110 to G102 or from GG31 to G1G3.
- We may allow you to transfer to a different degree programme if you meet the entry requirements and ask us before 15 September.
- We will allow you to transfer to a different degree programme later if this is feasible, which depends on how similar the programmes are.

Typical alternative English language qualifications
For a degree course we require at least: GCSE (or GCE O-level) grade C (or 6), IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sections), TOEFL (paper-based) 580, TOEFL iBT (Internet-based) 92, or equivalent. For the SEFP we normally require at least IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. But please note this important information for applicants applying for Tier 4 immigration permission. IELTS and TOEFL must have been taken within the last two years. (It will help us confirm your place if we receive your results by 31 July and we must receive your results by 31 August.)
Second-year entry
We will consider direct entry into the second year of our courses, and occasionally to the third year of our MSci courses, but not to the final year of any course. You need to apply through UCAS in the same way as for first-year entry. We will expect you to meet our normal first-year entry requirements, as above, and to pass the first (or second) year at your current institution with a minimum overall average mark that we will specify in the range 50–70% depending on your current institution. We will also require the course you have followed at your current institution to match ours reasonably closely and we will ask you to provide detailed syllabus information to establish this after you have applied.
