Topics for research students in Statistics

Research themes

Research statisticians specialize in various different topics. Here are some details of the topics investigated by statisticians in the School of Mathematical Sciences. Some investigations involve collaboration with scientists in other departments or elsewhere.

There is also a list showing the research topics currently pursued by individual members of statistics staff.

From time to time, we have projects available which are co-sponsored by an industrial partner, or which are run jointly with colleagues in another department at Queen Mary. Recent examples of the latter include the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, and the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine. For 2012-13 entry we currently have the following project available.

Statistics

Fully funded Queen Mary studentship for 2012-13 entry

  • Optimum design for pharmacokinetic sampling and dose-level allocation in Phase II/III clinical trials, supervised by Dr Barbara Bogacka and co-funded by Novartis

EPSRC competition funded projects for 2012-13 entry

  • Permanent based approaches to maximum likelihood estimation in generalized linear mixed models, supervised by Dr Heiko Grossmann
  • Metamodels in design and analysis of computer experiments, supervised by Dr Hugo Maruri-Aguilar

Projects for research students

Knowledge in mathematical subjects is cumulative: unless you have understood one level, you have no idea what the next level is about. So it is not really sensible to choose your research project until you have been enrolled as a PhD student for about six months. Nonetheless, you may want to contact a member of statistics staff to discuss potential research areas or projects.

For a more general discussion of potential research projects, contact the Statistics postgraduate admissions tutor, Dr Heiko Grossmann, at h.grossmann@qmul.ac.uk.
