Fees & funding
Fees and Funding for doing a PhD or MPhil in Statistics
Tuition fees
In 2011–12, the tuition fees are £3,440 for students from within the European Union, and £11,300 for students from elsewhere.
Funding
Some funding is available for well-qualified applicants: see the projects and research themes pages for further details of specific funded projects. The School of Mathematical Sciences currently supports approximately ten new postgraduate research students each year, spread over our research areas. Tuition fees are paid by the funding body, and students receive maintenance stipends at the UK Research Councils' rate of £13,290 per annum (in 2010-11) plus a London Allowance of £2,000 per annum, for a period of 3–4 years. In some years there is an additional premium for Statistics students.
The main sources of funding are the Doctoral Training Accounts (DTAs) of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and of Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) itself. The criterion for eligibility for the EPSRC DTA is a little technical: roughly speaking, stipends are available only to applicants who have been resident in the UK for at least three years (for purposes other than education, in the case of applicants from outside the European Union). European Union applicants who do not satisfy the residency condition may be offered fees-only awards. Please refer to the EPSRC website for precise rules. The QMUL DTAs are open to all.
For collaborative projects, funding may be available from an industrial partner, from the Medical Research Council (MRC) or from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
A joint Queen Mary/China Scholarship Council studentship is available for suitably qualified applicants from eligible Chinese Universities. For more details see here.
All postgraduate research students are offered the possibility of earning extra income from marking undergraduate work and teaching undergraduate exercise classes within the School.
