Application procedure

The most direct means of applying is to complete a formal application form.  Alternatively you may wish to contact a member of the School to discuss potential research areas or projects first.

You can apply online for the programme. If you prefer to submit a paper application, forms may be downloaded electronically from the Queen Mary Postgraduate Study pages. To request an application form and postgraduate prospectus, please contact the Postgraduate (PG) Administrator by e-mailing maths-pg@qmul.ac.uk or by writing to the address at the foot of this page. You will note that application form asks for a "500 word research proposal".  We realise that many applicants will not at this stage have anything in mind that is sufficiently well formed to count as a research proposal. In that case, we encourage you to use this section to tell us about your strengths and interests:  which courses you did particularly well in, which particularly interested you, and what background reading you may have done beyond the demands of a specific course.

If you would like to discuss your application informally with us first, you are welcome to contact one of the PG Admissions Tutors:

Completed paper application forms together with supporting documentation (refer to the cover of the application form) should be returned to the Admissions and Recruitment Office at the address given at the head of the form. If you applying after 1st January 2012, we strongly advise you to send an additional copy of your application to the PG Administrative Officer at the address given at the bottom of this page. We can then start processing your application without delay.  Although we accept applications at any time, it is better to contact us early, preferably before the end of March, particularly if you are seeking funding.  Note, however, that the situation with admissions can be quite fluid, so it may be worth contacting us even quite late in the academic year to see if there are any openings.

After receipt of your application, we make an initial assessment of your suitability for PG study at Queen Mary.  If we decide to pursue your application further, we will invite you to interview. If it is impractical to interview you in person we will do so by phone.  If you are able to attend in person, we often like to incorporate the interview into a wider programme of activities, such as meeting relevant members of staff and current PG research students, or even attending a study group or seminar in your chosen area of research.  We consider ourselves to be a friendly School, and like to take the opportunity to demonstrate this in the most direct way!

Finally, here is the address of the PG Administrative Officer, promised above.
