News
The next PG Research Day will be in May 2012. All second-year PG research students are required to submit a poster on some aspect of their study, and these posters are put on display at the PG Research Day. The Ann Cook Prize is awarded for the best poster as determined by a panel composed of the four Research Directors together with the Director of PG Studies; the People's Choice Prize is decided by a vote among the PG students themselves on the day. All of the 2011 posters may be viewed here. I think you'll agree that the quality of entries was uniformly high! Thanks to all second-year PG research students for their efforts.
Welcome
Welcome to the web pages for and about current PG Research Students in the School of Mathematical Sciences. They are intended to be a resource for supervisors too. First, a roundup of the main members of staff responsible for delivery of the programme. Contact details can be found elsewhere on the School's website.
- The Director of Postgraduate Research Studies for 2011-2012 is Professor Peter Keevash. He is responsible for overseeing the School’s postgraduate teaching and research activities.
- The Administrative Officer (Postgraduate Studies and Research) is Liisa Matomäki. She is based in room 101, the School Office in the Mathematics Building. She can help you with any general administrative queries during the course of your studies.
- The Executive Officer (Teaching and Research) is Dr Vivien Easson. Her role involves managing teaching and learning strategy in the School, including for postgraduates.
- The Postgraduate Tutors in each research area have direct responsibility for the research students. They appoint supervisors and monitor students’ progress. The tutors are: (Applied Mathematics) Dr Rainer Klages, (Astronomy and Astrophysics) Professor Professor Richard Nelson, (Pure Mathematics) Professor Peter Cameron, and (Statistics) Dr Heiko Grossmann.
- The Postgraduate Research Committee oversees the teaching and training of postgraduate research students. It has two elected postgraduate student representatives, one from the Mathematics Research Centre (currently Matthew Spencer) and one from the Astronomy Unit (currently Joe Elliston).
Finding your way around
If you are a student who has just started or is just about to start, try navigating to "Induction and new students" on the menu to the left. "Key dates" sets out the main events of the calendar at a glance. "Assessment and progression" presents an overview only of the topic; for a more detailed and definitive guide to staying the right side of the law, please consult the Guide for PG Research Students and their Supervisors.
Mathematics students (both pure and applied) and statistics students are members of the Mathematics Research Group, while astronomy students are (of course) members of the Astronomy Group. Mostly the information on these web pages applies to both groups, but more specific information can be found by following the appropriate menu links.
