Random matrix puzzles
Boris Khoruzhenko, Professor of Mathematics
Eigenvalues of large random matrices display remarkable statistical
patterns in their distribution. Inexplicably, the same patterns also
appear in various mathematical and physical problems with no obvious
connection to random matrices. In this non-technical lecture I will
talk about some of these puzzles and random matrix signatures.
After obtaining his first degree in mathematics from Kharkov University
and his PhD in theoretical and mathematical physics from the Institute
for Low Temperature Physics of the Ukrainian Academy of Science, Boris
Khoruzhenko held various research positions in Ukraine, France and
Germany before joining Queen Mary in 1996 and becoming a Professor of
Mathematics in 2007. His research interests evolve around disordered
systems, with the current focus on random matrices.
