June

Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th, Year 10 Maths Taster Days for Gifted and Talented Students

BOOKING IS NOW CLOSED. Please note that we are no longer accepting bookings for this event. Schools with outstanding application forms should return them as soon as possible. You will then be informed if your students have been allocated a place.

This event is being run in association with the London Excellence Hub and the aim is to give Year 10 students the opportunity to find out more about university mathematics.

They will attend classes on subjects such as cryptography, chaos and symmetry. They will have the chance to question our current undergraduates about their experiences and find out about career options open to maths
graduates. Attendees will be taken on a campus tour of the university.

It is free to attend and lunch is provided.

Monday 28th, A Day in the Life of a Maths Undergraduate: University of London Taster Course

Come along and experience what it’s like to be a mathematics undergraduate. In first year undergraduate students cover a wide range of topics and they then go on to specialise in a subject they like in later years. You will experience a variety of topics throughout the day, including statistics and mathematical computation. You will also meet our undergraduate students to hear what they have to say about studying mathematics and we will highlight possible career routes for mathematics graduates.

Open to A-level (or equivalent) Maths students. Booking is required and can be done through the University of London Taster course website which goes live in January 2010: www.lon.ac.uk/tasters.

Wednesday 30th, What is Astrophysics?: University of London Taster Course

Astrophysicists use physics and mathematics to help them investigate the solar system, stars, galaxies and the history of our universe. In the morning you will hear about the Cassini mission to Saturn and have the opportunity to step into the shoes of a Cassini Scientist as you make the case for the observations against the priorities of your colleagues. In the afternoon you will learn about how to become a black hole hunter and will have the chance to quiz our undergraduate students on what it’s like to study astrophysics at university.

Open to A-level (or equivalent) students taking both Maths and Physics. Booking is required and can be done through the University of London Taster course website which goes live in January 2010: www.lon.ac.uk/tasters.

July

Thursday 8th, Mathematics with Business or Finance: University of London Taster Course

In the business and financial sectors, mathematics is a very powerful tool. In this taster course you will attend mathematics classes covering basic mathematical concepts and sessions where you will be applying mathematics to business and finance.

Open to A-level (or equivalent) Maths students. Booking is required and can be done through the University of London Taster course website which goes live in January 2010: www.lon.ac.uk/tasters.

Friday 12th, Inevitable Patterns in Mathematics: University of London Taster Course

Would you be surprised to find a group of 20 people who are either all friends or all strangers? What about a string of coloured beads which contained 100 equally spaced beads of the same colour? Or a secret about you hidden in the text of 'War and Peace'?

We usually assume that patterns in mathematical or physical structures reflect some underlying order in the structure. However, armed with some simple mathematical ideas, it can be shown that some patterns occur inevitably, even in the most apparently disordered places. These ideas form the branch of mathematics known as Ramsey theory. In this course you will investigate some problems from Ramsey theory, many of which lead to some beautiful mathematics, and some of which are remarkably still unsolved.

Open to A-level (or equivalent) Maths students. Booking is required and can be done through the University of London Taster course website which goes live in January 2010: www.lon.ac.uk/tasters.

Sunday the 18th to Friday the 23rd July, The Goldmsiths' Company Science for Society Courses

We offer two 5-day residential courses on the Queen Mary Mile End campus: one on Astrophysics and a second on Mathematics. Sponsored by The Goldsmiths' Company, they are aimed at teachers of GCE Advanced-Level Mathematics and other secondary school teachers who have studied mathematics to at least GCE Advanced-Level. The course is taught by several Queen Mary academic staff, who will each focus on their own research and/or teaching interests.

For more information on the content of the course and how to book please visit our course homepage.

Ri Masterclasses

The Ri Masterclasses resume on the 16th of January and run until the 20th of March excluding the half term holiday weekends. Sessions are held in People's Palace 2 (PP2) Lecture Theatre. Pre-booking only through the Royal Institution.
