This term we welcomed our largest ever cohort of PhD students, following substantial investment in PhD scholarships within the School.

At the induction event, two new students, Lewis Mead and Kieran Ryan, received the School’s annual Ian MacDonald award in recognition of their outstanding research proposals. This £1000 award is named in honour of Professor Ian McDonald, a former member of the School reknowned for his contributions in a number of mathematical fields.

The 29th conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC) took place from Sunday 9 July to Thursday 13 July. The conference was organised by the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) in partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute and supported by funding from the National Science Foundation. More than 200 mathematicians from around the world attended the conference, many of them PhD students to whom we were able to offer generous financial support.

We are pleased to announce that following our submission in November, the School was recently awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Renewal award until November 2020.  Since our original Bronze Award in 2013, we have made significant progress in embedding equality and diversity practices across School activities.

Whilst this four year bronze renewal is an excellent achievement, the School had originally applied for a Silver award, so there is more work to be done!

On Friday 21st April, the School of Mathematical Sciences hosted the annual Postgraduate Research Day. This is an annual event that showcases and celebrates the outstanding research being undertaken by our PhD community in the School of Mathematical Sciences, and is open to all staff and students.

This year, the event was held in the University’s new Graduate Centre. At the end of the event, prizes were awarded to 2nd year students judged have given the best poster and to 3rd year students for the best research presentations.

We are delighted that this year the School of Mathematical Sciences is hosting its first Year 11 Maths Summer Schools.

Summer Schools give students a valuable opportunity to familiarise themselves with a university campus, gain a more in-depth understanding of a subject they enjoy studying and meet new friends.

The students' introduction to university life will include the chance to discover some new areas of mathematics, complete problem-solving tasks and mini-research projects to develop their understanding of university-style learning and teaching.
