School of Mathematical Sciences Building

Welcome to the School of Mathematical Sciences

This page is designed to give you a brief introduction to our School with a focus on three key areas: teaching and learning, research, and our community.

Teaching and Learning

We teach a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that focus on the core areas of Pure and Applied Mathematics. With over 70 academic staff, we are one of the largest Mathematics departments in the UK, so our students have the opportunity to explore and develop skills in a wide range of mathematical fields.

In addition to teaching and research expertise, many of our academics have several years of industry experience, including qualified actuaries and trading and investment specialists. They bring real-world experience into the classroom and equip our students with the knowledge and tools to succeed in whichever career path they choose.

Research

Our School is home to seven research groups, spanning a diverse range of mathematical disciplines from Algebra and Number Theory to Complex Systems and Networks to Statistics and Data Science. We have a thriving postgraduate research community, with around 90 PhD students. We are proud of the brilliant breakthroughs our researchers have made in recent years, such as the use of mathematical modelling to reduce the number of malaria deaths in Africa.

Our Community

The School of Mathematical Sciences is not your typical learning environment. Joining our School means you’ll be part of a diverse, international community of like-minded, intellectually curious students and staff. As mathematicians, we use logic and creativity to solve the problems of the 21st century and our world-leading academics are here to inspire you.

It’s a supportive community too, working together to achieve goals and ensure that equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. Our recently refurbished building has been thoughtfully designed to create spaces for our community to come together and collaborate. We are also home to the award-winning Mathematics Society, which organises social, academic and careers events throughout the year.

If you see yourself in the School of Mathematical Sciences, we invite you to continue browsing our website and to take a look at our social media to get a feel for what life is like with us.
