Lectures (not Week 7):
Monday 2pm; Tuesday 12pm; Tuesday 3pm.
All in the Arts 2 Lecture Theatre (Arts Two Building).
The first lecture is on Tuesday 8th January.
Note that Week 7 is Test and Consolidation Week, and there are no (ordinary) lectures in this week.
Instead, there will be a mid-term test, at a time and place to be determined.
There will probably also be a revision lecture that week.

Classes (not Weeks 1 and 7): As per your individual allocation. You must attend
the class you have been allocated to, even if that class be on Monday at 3pm. (If your last bit of formal
teaching before that ends at say 12 noon, then I expect you can profitably spend some time in the library
reviewing the notes for various of your courses, in order to make sure you understand the material properly.)
There are no classes in Weeks 1 or 7.
All classes are on Wednesday, with the first class on 15th January, possibly
at 11am (or 10am) on Wednesday 15th January. Please, as a matter of urgency, make sure you know which tutorial group
you are in and when it meets.

Assignments: These should be handed in to your tutor in the exercise class you have been assigned to.

- The definitive content of this module is contained in the lecture notes,
and so the module text is not essential. However, you may find the module text useful in
supplying some additional examples, diagrams and explanations. The module text is less useful
for the theoretical aspects of this module.
- Students are expected to be quiet during lectures.
Mobile phones must be switched OFF in lectures and in exercise classes.
- Exercise classes start in Week 2. There are no exercise classes during the consolidation and test week (Week 7).
- Use of calculators is not permitted in either the final examination or the in-term test.
- Being a student is full-time job. Thus should you aim to spend 9–10 hours a week on
each of the four modules you currently studying. Note that only about 4 hours of
this is timetabled work.
- It is my job to try to educate you to produce independent learners:
employers are seeking people who can think for themselves, not merely
follow recipes. I will help you achieve this.
Note that the word ‘educate’ comes from the Latin word educare
meaning ‘to rear’ or ‘to bring up’; it does not mean ‘to spoon-feed’!
(The word educare is a compound word, with parts e (ex) ‘from’
and ducere ‘to lead’.)
Some notes may eventually appear here, but do not count on it.
You take notes in lectures, basically writing down what I write on the board.
The theorem numbers and examples are likely to be different from what I
do in class. I have also included some notes here not included in lectures,
and vice-versa.
Some material that is useful to rather more than just this course.
Solutions to past papers will NOT be made available. Please come to see me
during my office hours if you have problems with the questions.
Some previous in-term tests are shown below. There was only one such thing till 2009.
Last year, we reverted to just having the mid-term test, and we continue that tradition this year.
Solutions are only going to be given to a couple of these,
and that means that I shall not post any further solutions here.
